- Ipperwash Firing
LONDON - The police officer who shot and killed native protester Dudley George will stay on the provincial police payroll, at least for now.
Sergeant Kenneth Deane appealed his dismissal yesterday.
A police spokesman says Deane can't be fired now because once an appeal is filed, a stay is imposed on any penalty under the Police Service Act.
Deane was convicted of criminal negligence in 1997 for shooting George during a police confrontation with native protesters occupying Ipperwash Provincial park.
He later pleaded guilty to a charge of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act.
It was on that finding of discreditable conduct that an adjudicator last week ordered Deane to resign from the force.
George's brother Pierre is outraged after hearing Deane is appealing.
He says it's just wrong, adding that Deane should just leave the force.
The matter is set to go to a commission meeting February 11th.
