One of the best known and most popular residents of Hamilton Beach, William Smith, aged 79, of 76 Beach Boulevard, was almost instantly killed late Wednesday night last when struck by a car driven by Road Superintendent Thomas Mackie, R.R. 1, Grimsby, after another car had swerved to avoid striking the pedestrian.

Mr. Mackie said he was following close behind the other car when it suddenly swerved, after which Mr. Smith loomed up suddenly in front of him. He said he had no opportunity to avoid striking him.
