John and JamesDavidse'ii, cf Sn‘iith's Falls, and an lhipr‘ovemerit in the service is expected. The reorganized Wm. Hamilton Com- pany, of Pete'r‘bor’otigli, has been granted a, charter by the Ontario government. The new concern is capitalized at $300,000. " A resident of Peterborough county, ' 75 years of. age, Was never on a railway train until Friday of last week, when he s'drted on ,a journey to Seattle to visit members of his family. A Goderich man was lying in a ham- mock at Chemong Park on the 15th ult., when the hammock broke and he fell on a small stump, sustaining injuries to his spine from the cheats of which he died in the Peterborough hospital on Thurs- day of last week. The Norwood “Register” says that a couple of surveyors in the employ of the Dominion Government have been en- gaged in the vicinity of Tweed for the past few days locating the highest points in the district. It is the intention of the government to build a series of towers on the highest points in the country for observation purposes, similar to those of the United States coast survey. Two hundred excursionists left Barrie per steamer “Islam,” on July 10th, for the Trent Valley Canal. When passing through Lock Three the shaft broke, and the boat was tied up all night. Pro- visions were so scarce that some of the passengers, who slept on the decks, the floors and the tables, had nothing to out until they reached Barrie at 11.30 next day. Food was bought from farmers in the neighborhood of the lock by Captain Mclnuis, who did everything he could for the comfort of the crowd. On reach- ing Barrie he was cheered lustily by the returned passengers and several hun- dred people who were anxiously await- ing the arrival of the boat. Hauled Down Their Flag. AMERICAN. SHOE MEN IN THEIR BOSTON CONVENTION CONFESSED THEIR. DEFEAT. ~ The capitulation of the American shoe manufacturers, and their candid admis- sion that they can no longer compete with the Slater shoe in the Canadian market, has given an impetus to the Slater factory shoe. The ladies of Canâ€" ada. admit that the Slater shoe has gainâ€" ed their loyal support on merit, and that its equal cannot be found in the foreign market at $4.00 a pair. The gentlemen of Canada made this admis- sion years ago.
