What a. strange being the man must 'be who has the ambition to be a high Russian official; it almost seems like signing one’s own death war- rant to accept a, portfolio in pr times The Governor of Baku ' was recently assassinated by a bomb; and apparently bombâ€"throwing has be- come quite a usual occurrence. was looking over in a newspaper a list of the high officials assassinated during the last few years, writes T. P. O’Connor. Here it is; it is formidable and dreadful list: M. Bogoliepoff, Minister of Educa- tion, by Karpovich. after the Univerâ€" I M. Sipiagin, Minister of the In- terior, by Balmas-heff, April 15th, 1902. The private kitchen of the Sultan of. Turkey is a. veritable fortress, consisting of a small chamber sit- uated to the right of the great on- trance, and is guarded by barred windows and an armor-plated door. When cooked, each dish is fastened with red wax, bearing the official kelardjhi, and remains hermetically closed until the seals are broken in the Sultan’s own preâ€" sence. A collector of postcards in St. of Dodd’s Kidney Petersburg states that all the sold- iers in the Japanese army arc Supâ€" postcards. These cards are surrounded with an border, printed white silk, and are worn by the Japanese soldiers on chests. Before going to the war they write nu’the postcard the name and address ofthe person to whom they wish the information of their death to be sent. In case of death on the field of battle the postâ€" cards are stamped with the seal of the regiment certifying the death of the bearer, and are sent to Japan. â€"â€"+ A LEADING BANK’S SUCCESSâ€" FUL YEAR. In another part of this paper will be found the report of the directors Sovereign Bank of Canada, which was adopted at the third an- nual meeting of the shareholders, held in Toronto on the 13th of this month. The most important anâ€" nouncement contained in this report was that pertaining to the (livid-and, which has been raised from 5 I-er CClHL, as a. reth of a very successâ€" a ful year’s work. In the course of an interesting address, it was pointed out by the General Manager; Afr. D. M. Stewart, that the total assets showed an increase for the year of $3,065,000, which brings the total figure up to $11,670,000. Over forty per cent. of these assets are immed- iately available, while over a million dollars of the amount is in actual cash and clearing house‘ exchanges. An especially valuable feature of the business of the Sovereign Bank is the large number of its depositors, in contradistinction to those bank- ing institutions which are so largely dependent upon a few large deposiâ€" proceeding to have an amh- tors. This is evidenced by the fact that the average deposit amounts to only $311 per capita. Equally satisfactory is the excep- tionally large distrilmtion of loans, by a the bank having no less than 6,185 ROSCOW’ February 17th, borrowmg cusminersâ€"representing an average loan of $1,440 per head. This avoidance of the tendency to depend upon a few‘large accounts rc- duccs the possibility of loss to a minium. ' The shareholders expressed them- selves as greatly pleased with the result of the year’s business, and, indeed, they may well congratulate themselves upon the really wonderful progress that has been made by the Sovereign Bank under Mr. Stewart’s careful management of its affairs. __.._.+_____ JOB WORTH THE GETTING.
