Natural Science protests again, and in the strongest terms of reprobn- tion, against the destruction of the world's insectivorous birds, song birds and those of rare plumage for the deco ration of women’s hats. It says that the rate at which they are disappearing: from the face of the earth to satisfy this extraordinary taste of the “gentler sex " can hardly be realized. On the 13th - of April lost nearly half a million birds were sold at an auction in London. As large a sale took place in February, and others were to follow in July and October. Sept. 2.â€"An unknown man has been shot on the Skaguay trail by a committee of Vigilantes, and his bones are now bleaching «on a pile of rocks within a. few rods of the pass. This news was brought down by the stetmer Utopia, which arrived from Skaguny. The Utopia left Skuguay on August 25th. Some time ago a sack of' flour was stolen. Suspicion pointed to a man who was encountered near the summit. A committee of six was chosen to ferret out. and punish the thief. These men went to the tent of the suspected man and found the miss- ing sack. The man begged for mercy, but the committee, convinced of his guilt, decreed that he be killed. The man was dragged from the tent and tied up tightly to a pole. The commit- teemeu stood oil" a short distance and shot together. The thief's body was pierced with a dozen bullets, and he died instantly. Skaguay is the boom town of Alaska. Every man whose heart failed him when he encountered the first hardship has turned town site boomer. Four weeks ago Skaguay was not known; today there are not less than 4,000 people. in ‘ addition to those in ships in the harbor. They have surveyed the town site, and the first comers had first choice. Dear delightful doll that she is, she actually attends a meeting of the Sc]â€" bome Society with aigrcttes in her bonnet." The contempt and sarcasm that ring through his remarks are not undeserved by women. They claim, and with some color, to lead in all the refinements of life, and in ‘the realm of morals, yet the truth is that their thoughtless and vul- gar pursuit of fashion is resulting in tho extermination. and that by the most cruel methods, of a race of creatures most useful and even necessary to our existence, and in themselves harmless and beautiful.
