A Law ("lch Sn-pcclld or Funbculement -ulvcu IL; Cuuk’t or Exile or the ka â€"flc Went lo Canadaâ€"Now Proved lo be Innocent. but u:- (‘auuot be Found. Some four or five years ago a cer-. tam well known and immensely popu- ‘sr managing clerk to a very disting- xishcd firm of solicitors in London, Eng, was suddenly called upon to balance the office petty cash. The. firm did a very extensive business, and as it was then in the middle of the term time the petty cash account am. ounted to something like £250 to £300. There was no reason for suspecting the managing clerkâ€"on the contrary, the most implicit confidence was reposed in him, and people were astounded there- fore when it was found that the petty cash did not balance to within £80 and some odd shillings. The clerk vehe< mently protested his innocence, but there was no satisfactory explanation forthcoming, and although the firm were loath to prosecute, they could'not, of course, entirely overlook the mat- ter. Accordingly the employs was given the alternative of the dock or retirement from the land of his birth. He chose the latter, and with the as- sistance ofa. few remaining friends be- took himself to Canada, and the last that was heard of the poor fellow was that he was working "on the railway" out west. Now for the sequel. and it is here‘ that the strangeness and romance of the story come in. The firm of solicit- ors still flourishes, and a. few weeks ago they had occasion to search an old deed box for some papers which had been prepared about the time the managing clerk was declared a de- faulter. In doing so there was discov- Bred a deed of some sort, _whioh bore an £80 stamp, and which it has been further discovered was never entered in the firm's books. The deed had to do with the articles ofa. law clerk, or something of that sort, and once stamped was easily overlooked..It was at once apparent that the missmg £80 had gone to y this fee, and that the exile was rea ly innocent after all. The firm have made strenuous efforts to find this erstwhile assistant. but all traces of him seem to have disappear- edâ€"oven the last remaining members of his family have left the country. Should these lines perchance meet his eye. he will probably require no assur- ance that there is a substantial berth open for him in the neighborhood of Lincoln's Inn-fields. SLR JOHN .MIACDONALD'S OLD CONSTITUENCY. Mr. J. H. Metcalfe, M.P.. for Kingston. Talks of the Splendid Curative Character of Dr. Agnew's Catarr- had Powder. 'I‘here is no small runount of talk in all parts of the country of the class of puople who are proclaiming the reâ€" markable results accomplished by Dr. Agnew’s Catarrhul Powder for lead- ing- citizcns in all parts of the Domin- ion am using it. Among others who tell of the effective nature of this me- dicine for catarrht buy fever, or cold in the head, is Mr. J. II. B‘Ietcrulfe. the popular I\I.P., for Kingston, the conâ€" stituency represented for so many years by the late Sir John A. Mac- donald. Beyond all doubt this rem- edy is a marvel. radical in its effects, it is at 'the some time simple and agree- able to take. wl ich cannot be said of most catarrh medicines. A CITY WITHOUT CHIMNEYS. From the top of the cathedral spire in Mexico you can see the entire city. and the most striking feature of the View is the absence of chimneys. There is not a chimney in all Mexico; not a. grale, nor a stove, nor a furnace. All the cooking is done with: charcoal in Dutch cookmg ovens. and while the gas is sometimes offensive, one soon beâ€" comes used to it. Cure the Cough with Shiloh's Cure. The best Cough Cure. The extraordinary spectacle of a star dancer performing a. leading part! in a. ballot clad in deep mourning weal witnessel in an Italian theatre ashort time ago. The ballerina. in spite of the recent death of her brother, took part in the first portion of the perform- ance dressed entirely in white. save for a black bow on her corsage. Dur- ing the interval she changed this attire for one of black. with somberness quite unrelieved. and her appearance in the trappings and the suits of woe was, it, seems, greeted most sympathetically by the impressionable spectators. c, , l l O””‘“““”‘”M I “65“ Few Women ENJOY LIFE AS THEY OUGNT. , Many a; about)! -41?’.‘ our ‘«."’-" “ - ' -< ..~5 .\\v~‘.- is" ‘fi _ ~- . ‘ weak and fickly, an?! _ ' ‘ - suurr untold mum" ~. . ’ , throuhakmmh pecul- 4' ‘. a A' f: into their“; ‘~ - IT IS WRONG. ‘. THE RAW CUTTING \VINDS Bring to the surface every latent pain. .Rheltmatism. neural in, lumbago. and A CHARMING SOUBRETTE WHO AT‘ l complaints of a simi ar character hold TRACTS LARGE AUDIENCES. ! She Tells Bomelhlng of (honor-d Worki Necessary to Make a Successful Artistâ€"- Many Break Down [Ynder the Strain- Reporter. From the Quebec Telegraph. Those who have attended the per- formance at the Academy of Music this week. will readily concede that: Miss Zelma Rawlston is one of the brightest soubrettes on the stage. She is a clever musician and a charming singer. and as an impersonator shows a talent considerably above the aver- age. She has winning ways, a mis- chevous twinkle in her eye. and a captivating manner. Her magnetism for drawing large audiences L3 not alone confined to the s . as she is possessed of a. character w ‘ch is pleas- ing to come in contact with. It is full of good nature, amiable qualities, and a charm that endears her to all those who have been so fortunate as to have made her acquaintance. A Telegraph representative had the pleasure of an interview with Miss Rawlston which resulted in a. biographical sketch of her life bemg published in these columns on Saturday. During the course of the interview, Miss Rawlston let out a secret, which she consented to allow the Telegraph to make public. For many cars she has devoted the best part 0 her time to study. some- times practising at the piano alone for 10 hours a day. I It is not therefore astonishing. that under a. strain of this kind, she began to feel the effects upon her nervous constitu- tion. She is of a robust build and ap- parently strong physique, and stood the strain \vithut interi upting her studies. until she had perfected that which she desired to accomplish. Like many oth- er artists whlo have gone before. she completed lh'er work, graduated with the highest honors, and prepared to en- ter u on her stage career. The reacâ€" tion 0 over study, and long hours, soon began 'to tell upon her, and although it did not interfere with her climb- ing the ladder of fame as an actress. She very soon became cognizant of the fact that she was suffering from a strain on the nerves, which threatened sooner or later to result seriousl to bier health. Her sufferings did no in- terfcre with her engagements, but pre- vented ‘hler from participating in pleas~ ore of any kind. 'Ilhe nervousness in- creased to such an extent that she be- came a victim to insomnia, and slow- lv her digestive powers gave out, and she was fast becoming a chronic suf- ferer from nervous debility. After try- ing many remedies and prescriptions. she one day read an advertisement in one of the daily papers referring to the complete recovery of a similar case as |bier own, with‘ the aid of Dr. \Vil- liams’ Pink Pills. She had tried so many patent remedies that she almost despaired of trying any more. Some- thing seemed to influence her to test this preparation, and she ventured to purchase one box of the pills. Before she had used half of them. she began to feel an immediate improvement in her condition. and by the time she had used two or three boxes, she was a different woman entirely, and to-day there are few actremes who display a better ex- ample of perfect health than our repre- sentative found Miss Ranvlston in when he called upon her last week. The sub- jccl: was suggested by our reporter see- ing a box of the Pink Pills in Miss Rawl- ston's possession. "I always carry them with me," she said, "and would not be a day without them; although I do not take them regularly, Ifind them a. very beneficial stimulus for one in our pro- fession. If the assertion of the benefit which these pills have worked upon me Will! do the public any good. I am 961‘ fecto willing that my name should be mentioned, and that the facts shouldbe given to the public.” , . Miss Rawlston's permanent address is in care of her manager. Mr. Tom Mc- Guire. Room 5.
