o p ‘7 A TlGER Him iN INDIA, I, l l I J t Fate of a Guide “he Did a Foolhardy Thin: in the Jungle. Dr. J. {1. Porter describes his Indian guide, “ho showed him a tiger's lair, as a lean, bl..ck, wolf-Lire man whose name was SLkunder :‘ingh, who was a moncmaiiiac stout tigers. There are said to be stylish tigers and others not stylish. The lordly tiger is the man cater. He is at once the hero and the aristocrat of the race. and where he reams the cattle killer must be silent, for the man eater, though sprung from the lowly ranks of wild. beast hunters and risen through the middle class of cattle killers, brooks not the lmsiing in the roar of an interior. It is in the absence of cattle during drouch's that the cattle killers turns to man flesh. lie fears men but will not Leonie animal hunter again. the pride of tho race is against it. When the tiger has killed a steer and ted thereon, he goes to where the karlnilii grows thiik and lies in the nul- iah, lazy with the meat in him. and sleeping lightly. it is here, as he takes his nap. that the hunters find It is the hunter's desire to have his tiger fight, to turn and charge the ones who seek his htindsime pelt, but Dr.l’orter's tiger knew better. “Stripes†bolted and With cool judgment sneaked from place to place, like a siill hunter, aided by a coat, which in the jungles is protect,- ively colored, and away he went up the gully, galloping like a horse. his soft paws making no sound. A stifling cloud of dust arose from the brittle grass.¢ais- ed by the trampling elephants. The deadly lndian sun beat down and turn- ed the landscape black in the eyes of some of the less hardy ones. In the shade, which was soon reached.a troop of monkeys showed the way. A tiger can hide anywhere, and in heavy cover one must look as for a needle in a hay- stai-k, far and near. The tiger was found at last in the jungle's edge. A shot aimed at the beast hit it in the side, far back, a wound that made the beast a dangerous one. There was a. pretty how-we-do. The tiger would kill if it got a chance, and the boaters went into trees. Sikunder Sin h got off the elephant and started a ter the tiger afoot, an ry at what he called the depravity of t e men. Of all things a hunter can do. hunting a Wounded tig- er on foot is the most reckless. In covâ€" er the man afoot: is utterl at the lurk- ing beast's mercy. Sikun er Singh was out of sight. Suddenly there wasa long. fierce snarl in the bush and a. rustle of a heavy body: then arose a long quavering cry of mortal agony. All knew what it meant. The elephant. were goaded forward. and wild yells and frantic screams arose from all sides, the elephants joining in the pandemonlum. In a. little opening the Sikunder Singh in the mouth of the tiger. his thin arms and legs tossing as the tiger drew back. No one would shoot through the human shield into the tiger. But on the left a man got a. flank shot. Drop- ping thc man the tiger sprang at an clephant's face, tearing it down by the head. The hunters came together about the two and a bullet broke the t' er’u neck. The tiger weighed 600 poun . The hunisman who would have been the first to denounce so foolhardy an act as his own. never spoke coherently again. His spine was crushed. TURKISH BATH. Any small room will do, provided it has a “hard finish" upon the walls, so they will not peel or crack in the damp- ness. The room is stripped of all fur- niture, except a steamer chair. The window is then opened the veriest trifle, and a small frame covered with stout canvas is placed at the opening. This insures ventilation. for without fresh air your Turkish bath isn't going to be a. success. A large tub of water is next mount- ed in a framework and a kerosene lamp plucod underneath it. Your steamer chair must be high enough for the pan of water and lamp to sit under- neath. So much for keeping you warm in the chair. When you seal: your- self in the steamer chair you will have on only the regulation white sheet of the Turkish bath. Over it you fling a. large \viirin robe. The room becomes so warm, and the bath is so thorough, that you are glad to throw it off ere long. In the bathtub you draw a quan- tity of boiling water, hot enough to steam. and should it cool you pull out the stopper and refill the tub. ’l‘wo fillings will be enough to keep the air moist through a bath an hour long. There is another thing needed. This is an alcohol lam and a kettle of wat- er. Such a simple thing as an after- noon tca kettle. allowed to boil hard with the cover off. will give enough steam to fill the little room full, Fifteen minutes before you take the inth light the lump under the pan of water which is safely tucked away unâ€" dcr your chair. and light also the oth- er lamps and set the. tub running full of boiling water. Close the door ot your bathroom. At the end of 15 minutes the steam will pour out when you open the door and you can take your scat in this chair ready for a gentle steam- in . fhtti was the first woman to have a private steam and vapor lritli. and her complexion is mid to depend largely upon it.
