1.24,, {41. q. THE SIZE OF IT. _ I â€"â€" Few People Have Any Idea 'Of the Extent of Canada. , The new railway line across continent to be built by the (Trunk will run that is 800 miles north of Toronto. This new line Will parallel the C. P. R. across the Western plains, yet it Will run 300 miles north of the road alâ€" though, in the public mind and to the eye, as one looks at a map, the with' each other and give a duplicate serâ€" vice, there stretches between them a it parallels. This means that roads may seem to compete range of. rich country about as far across as it is from Toronto to Montâ€" real. Through this intervening country, however, the Canadian Northern will run, but evenso, all three roads will have a. wide range of country to open up and from which to draw business. It has long been said that the Peace River country, through which the grand Trunk will carry its line, is destined to be' the greatest wheatâ€"groWing region in America. To realize the ‘size and possibilities of the Canada of the future one needs but to reflect that these vast wheat fields will lie 800 miles north of Toronto. Time thus gives effec- tive answer to those people in the United States and Europe Who have charged that Canada is too far north to ever amount to much. +- UURED DNUE AND FUR. ALL DODD’S KIDNEY PILLS MAKE f 0 ~ HALFWAY \VORK 0F KIDNEY DISEASE. I. J. McDonald Had Rheumatism and Dropsy, was Cured by Dodd’s Kidney Pillz, and Has Had no Return of the Trouble for Five Years. Windsor, Ont., Dec. 8.~â€"â€"(_Specia1)-â€"â€" it has been acknowledged for seine rears that Dodd’s Kidney Pills would cure any case of Kidney Dis~ also, and of late those interested in nedical science have been Watching :llose cures to con'v'ince...thelnselves :llat they were permanent. Gradualâ€" y the conviction is forced that Dodd’s Kidney Pills cure once and .‘or all. One more proof of this is furnished by John J. McDonald, a well known farmer, now residing at 1.30 Langlois Ave. Five years ago he was troubled with Rheumatism and Dropsy. For two years, he sufâ€" iered terribly, and‘the different medi- cines he tried failed to relieve him. His legs Were swollen and the pains he suffered were most acute. He used Dodsd’s Kidney Pills, Was cured, and his cure caused quite a sensation at the time. Mr: McDonald, speaking of his cure recently, says : “I have had no return of my trouble up to the present,"an'd I am not anxious ‘ for any.' It is ‘with pleasure I acknowledge that Dodd’s Kidney Pills cured me. I found them just as represented, and they did for me far more than I expected they would.” .........__ +- PERFUMES FOR HEALTH. __ Woman With Scented Handkerchief a Benefactor. To preserve one's beauty and en- hance one’s attractiveness, perfumes are necessary. They are stimulating and refreshing, especially lavender, lemon, rose and violet. They may prove even more “beneficial by dc~ ;troying disease germs. The liberal use of scent on the nandkcrchicf is calculated to make it antiseptic and to destroy the germs in it. The use of a perfumed or antiseptic handkerchief is, thereâ€" fore. consistent with the dictates of bacteriology. So that, instead of practising a luxurious habit, a woâ€" nan who puts scent on her handkerâ€" :hicfs may actually be doing good to her neighbors by checking the disâ€" tribution of infectious materials. The basis of all perfumes is an OS- Ientiul oil of some kind, derived :itllcr naturally from flowers or leaves, or artificially by a synthetic process. In either case, the essential )i1 is a powerful antiseptic and posâ€" ;csscs disinfecting properties, not less in degree than tho_cc of carbolic fold. The been the Nero, the tyrant, had garments, but also his body, lprayed with water distilled :llo choicest roses of his empire. Louis XIV. was inseparable from the heavy scent of orange blossoms. ["110 great Richelieu lived in rooms IO filled with flowelflodors that his :ourticrs nearly swooncd upon enter- ing them. Queen Elizabeth of England lulned her wigs with Spanish leather ;leopcd in musk. In the boudoirs of fashionable ladies perfumed candles were burned, and perfumed blocks or takes were thrown into the fire in order to fill the air with flaglallccl love of perfumes has never monopoly of the sybaritc. not only his daily from p cr~ and coffers containing expensive scents were kept HANGING IN THE ROOM. A kind of~scented lozenge was used to perfume the breath, and wigs or one’s own locks were scented. Tile old process of pcriuming the hair was first to wash it thoroughly, drying it carefully, and then heavily iimprcgnatesit with the odor from a 'burning pastille.‘ The . head was loosely covered with a cloth, the .s, ' w--~M.n> the Grand through a country Nol No! In Paris toâ€"day a, fashionable 'hair- dresser will impart any perfume de- sired to the hair. It is done by dusting the scalp thickly with finely powdered orris root if a violet odor is desired. . After it has been thoroughly rub- bed into the scalp hot dry cloths are wrapped about the head. Finally the powder is carefully and thor- oughly brushed out. The delicate fragrance like that of violets is de- lightful, but it is as short lived as the bloom of the flower and the proâ€" cess consumes hours. Every woman may not care to go to the trouble of perfuming her hair, but it well to perfume slightly all but it is well to perfume slightly all dresses, underclothing and bed linen, as well as one’s stationery. Don’t let the scent go beyond a suggestion; never strong enough to be very noticeable to others. If perfumes, as some will tell you, exercise a very marked effect on cerâ€" tain temperaments, they should be chosen with deliberation and discre- tion, if you want to be lovable and amiable. A A violet scented atmosphere, for example, makes those who are surâ€". rounded by its influence affectionate and peace-loving. Women oflovable natures are always fond of. violets. H-eliotropc usually finds devotees among the dainty, neat and rather unassuming dispositions, who dis- like fuss and notoriety. Rose perfume is most frequently used by those of warmâ€"hearted, un- imaginative temperaments who are inclined to extravagance and have a disregard of the more serious issues of life. ....â€"â€"+~ EHQLISH SPAVIH LiNih‘iEN‘l’ removes all hard, soft or calioused Lumps and Blemislles from horses. Gratefully yours, ADELBERT LEFEBVRE, Mair’s Mills, June 10th, 1899. vun The man who doesn’t believe in hiding his light under a bushel usually feels that a bushel isn’t large enough to hide it. THE BLOOD. The blood is life. We derive from the blood life, power, beauty, and reason, as. the doctors have been saying from time immemorial. A healthy body, a fresh appearance, and generally all the abilities ,we possess depend on that source of life. it is therefore the duty of every sensible man to keep the blood as pure and normal as possible. Naâ€" ture ill its infinite wisdom, has given us a thermometer indicating the state of the blood, which appeals to our reason by giving notice of its impurity. Small eruptions of the skin, to which we scarcely pay any attention,. headache, ringing noises in the cars, lassitude, sleeplessness, are generally a sign that the blood is not in its normal state, but it is filled with noxious substances. These symptoms deserve our full at- teni ion. If more attentiOn were paid to tlrese symptoms, and'steps taken to remove .tllem, then many illnesses from which we suffer would become unknown. and the human body Would become stronger and healthier. Attention therefore should be paid to those warning signs, and the blood can be purified and poisonous substances removed from it by the use of Dr. August Koenig’s Ham- burg Drops, discovered more than 60 years ago. "I see,” he said, “that coal has gone up again.” “Has it ‘2” she re~ plied. “And they're raising rents," he continued. “Well,” she exclaimâ€" ed, 'fia.ring up, .“if you wish to have our engagement broken off say so. I always hate to have people beat about the bush in a case of this kind." A CHEAP PENSION. The general manager Was asked if the company Would do something for him, as he was very poor. “How long has he bccli‘ivith us?” the official inquired. “Over forty years.” , “Always did his duty'?"
