GERMAN RAILROAD SPEED. Bialls and Ties Damaged by Speed in. Electric Trials. Several months have elapsed since the close of the experiments in highâ€" ;peed electrical traction over the specially prepared railroad line be- tween Berlin and Zossen. No ofï¬cial report of the. results obtained has yet - been printed. But sources some highly interesting formation has been obtained. It will be remembered that the pur- pose of the trials was to ascertain how high a rate of speed, by the use of electric power, might be practical- ly and safely attained with the track and cars provided. The trials began at forty miles an hour, the speed being gradually increased un- til about eighteen or twenty days afâ€" er the first trial. was made a. speed of 93.2 miles an hour was obtained. Then the experiments suddenly ceas- ed. The fact has been learned that the trials were brought to a close be- cause it Was found that at the high- est rate of speed the strain on the track and the roadbed was so great that they had to be repaired at night for the work of the next day. In short the limit of practical utility and safety had‘ been reached with the facilities at command. The track was in perfect repair, but the. rails were of the old Prussian fptandard and rather light. At or- dinary speeds everything worked per- fectly; but as a speed of 81 miles was approached and exceeded new and serious conditions were encount- ered, The rails and ties both prov~ ed too light for such a strain. the track began to give way, and the cars swayed violently from side to side. The net result of the trials 5 that up to a speed of 81 miles an four they were successful and satis- actory. German electricians regard the exâ€" leriments as technically successful rom their point of View. The dis- lppointment lay in the fact. which earns to have been conclusively demâ€" lnstrated, that. a large part of the iorman railroads cannot be adapted o highâ€"speed electrical traction withâ€" »ut being practically rebuilt. The Way to Avoid the Transmis- sion of Diseases. no: In these days we have most of us learned the lesson that contagion â€" that is to say the “catching†qual- ity of a. diseaseâ€"d3 in every case a matter of a speciï¬c microbe or germ. By speciï¬c is meant that each dis- ease has‘ its own microbe, and one cannot catch the disease except by receiving in one way or another that particular germ. These germs have their own manâ€" ners and customs, means of travel and prescribed length of life, and it is by the study of these details that we learn how to avoid the transmis- sion of contagious illnesses. We know, for instance, that to get tyâ€" phoid fever or cholera. the microbe has to be taken into the system in the form of impure food or water, and so every year one or more preâ€"' cautions are taken to have the wa- ter supplies of our big cities free from contamination, and stricter at- tention is given to the purity of our food.. An outbreak of typhoid fever is no longer considered, in the old sense, a “visitation of Providence,†but is recognized as a shame and a reflection on local conditions, wher- ever it occurs. Consumption and whooping-cough, we know, are passed from one person to another by means of the expectorâ€" ations, and it is to be hoped that in the near future we shall put this knowledge to better use than we do at present, and protect ourselves by much more stringent rules. General expectoration is a public offense and menace, and should be made a penal matter. The danger with expectorâ€" ated matter is that it dries and then is scattered by the wind so that one and all must take the risks. This outrage should be so handled by all in authority that in the near future the present condition of our cars and streets will seem like an evil nightâ€" mare. Scarlet fever and diphtheria. are caught by any emanations from the body, especially by saliva. The poi- son can cling for months and years to clothes and toys and books, and these things should always be de- stroyed if they have come in conâ€" tact with the sick, and sick rooms should be fumigated and made scien- tiï¬cally clean before they are again occupied. Notwithstanding all our precauâ€" tions there will always be disease germs, but the most virulent germ can do no harm unless it ï¬nds its proper soil, and there is no armor to compare with the resistant power of perfecthealtii.â€"Youth's Companâ€" ion. St. Mary’s Ferry, Dec. 18, 1895. Gentlemen: - I feel it my duty to you and to the public at large to tell what Dodd's Kidney Pills have done for me. About one year ago I began to suffer with severe pains over the re- gion of my kidneys, followed by a. very lethargic feeling. When I lay dowu it was torture to get up again. This state continued for some time, and all the while I was still getting weaker and losing flesh rapidly. My appetite was very much im~ paired, and at last I was obliged to call in a physician. He gave my sufferings a. very learn- ed name, and doctored me for some time, but I got no better. I called in several other physicians, but it was all no use; my sufferings got worse all the time until I began to despair of life. A friend advised me to use Dodd’s Kidney Pills.
