V r ...’l SEW: RAM Baa in thsWorld's Big Bugs. heading Scientists Caught In nu sci-a Yankee newts: and an Giant Swindle Across the Atlantic. Edward Pinter, the princelyswindler who has been robbing the great ï¬nanciers, politi- cians, and members of the nobility of Eng- land, of hundreds of thousands of dollars, true at one time an involuntary resident of Philadelphia, serving a term in the Eastern penitentiary for sneak robbery. His right name is supposed to be Jacob Sondheim, but he was better known: in this country as Albert Wise. His other aliases were Al “'ilson, James T. Watson, and Charles “'bitlemore. In the police records be is designated as pickpocket, sneak, conï¬dence man, and forger. He is one of the most versatile criminals known to the police of this country. _ Among his victims were some of the fore- most scientists; professors of great institu~ ‘tions and ï¬nanciers. His niethod'of swmd- ling here was similar to that which he has used in victmizing the men of England and the Continent. The sarcasm of it all is that these eminent gentlemen of finance and hilosophy were caught by a man who had been a common pickpocket, who claimed to have discovered an equivalent of the philos- ophcr's stone. DRAWING 15' BIG FISH. His pretentious varied slightly in his dif- ferent operations. In London, where he was arrested a few days ago for attempting to swindle a Bond street jeweler out of $200,000, he pretended to have discovered a chemical combination that would increase a lump of gold three times its weight, bulk and value. Among his victims in England during the past few years were a member of the Rothschild family, who lost about $100,000; a minister of Gladstonc’s cabi- net, who surrendered $30,000; a member of the ï¬rm of Baring Brothers, who gave up $250,000. There were many smaller victims and he almost landed the Duke of Edinburgh. To these people he held out the assurance that he could take any quan- tity of gold and by covering it with his magical chemicals it would increase two or three times in a short while. THE CLEVER DECEPTION. By some means, probably a slight of hand, double and triple quantities of gold were introduced into the retorts of furnaces so that he appeared to fulï¬ll his promises. These experiments, of course, were always performed with a small quantity of gold. Then the proposition would be made‘ to “ manufacture†gold on a large scale. ’lhis would require say 20,000 gold sovereigns which were to be placed in a large vat which was to be locked and sealed With patent locks, the key to be carried by the victim. It would be necessary, however, for Sondheim to be in the building during the process of “ manufacture.†Of course when the vaults were opened the money had disappeared with the swindler. The receptacles and locks were always made at the direction of the victim and it is assert- ed that they were always found intact so that it is probable that by some trick the gold was held out. and something else sub. stitutcd for it. A similar and EVEN MORE INGENIOUS S\VINDLE was practiced by Sondheim in his operations with the ï¬nanciers and scientists of this country. His claim was that he could take gold coin, place it in a solution that would absorb a certain percentage of the gold with out defacing the coin in the least or reduc- ing its weight. This he actually performed before the eyes of his dupes and secured large sums of money from a number of famous Americans. It is believed that hcaccomplish- ed the trick by either having gold dust in solution, or else having it concealed under paste, or the linin of the vessol used which would be dissolvec by the chemicals in the solution, having the sediment of gold in the bottom of the vessel. Ill“. WAS NEVER I'UNISHED for any of these conï¬dence operations either in this country or in Europe simply because none of his victims could be prevail- od upon to prosecute him. 'l‘heir fear of ridicule and their knowledge that they were morally guilty of embarking in a scheme to rob the gold coin of the country, as they thought, prevented them from exposing themselves to the terrors of a witness stand and the pillory of the public press. One eminent American did tell his story to De- tectivc Robert A. Pinkerton several years a 0, but when it- came to the pinch he back. 0t out, and refused to swear to the warrant. It is not believed that the prosecution in London will amount to anything, as the ar- rest was made prematurely. A Gun First! by n ('lm'k. A signal gun is fired from the citadel at Halifax, N. 8., each day at noon and at 9.30 p. in., by an arrangement remarkable in its ingenuity. A cable is laid from a clockmakcr's establishment to the citadel, and is connected with a clack which autto- matically ï¬res the gun. The dial of ihe astronomical clock has two small receptacles containing mercury. One of these is so placed that the reserve end of the record hair! will touch the mercury when the index end points to the sixtieth SCLOIHI. When the minute hand touches the mercury in one re- ceptacle and the second hand touches it in the other, the circuit is completed. and the big gun at the citadel is discharged by on elcciri : circuit passing through the clock.
