S. A. lchURTRY, Manager. Lindsay, Feb. l6th, I881. 50-t.f. Saturday, August 13th, 1881., President Garfield. On Monday last it. became necessary to perform a second operation on the President, in order to afford a fresh outlet for the pus, the flow of which through the old channel was partly ob- structed by the healing of the wound, which prevented the insertion of the drainage tube hitherto used. The Pres- idcnt bore the operation with great for- titude, and soon rallied from the effects of the ether; but, though there is little or no doubt of his ultimate recovery. Dr. Agnew is dissatisfied with his ap- pearance, and his weak digestive powers cause fears that his progress towards convalescence will be very slow. The London Lillll‘ef, a very high authority indeed. any; that the President will not be out of danger until the bullet is either extracted or encystedâ€"that is, until it is covered with the deposit which gradually forms over foreign bod- ies in the human system and renders them harmless. Titus enclosed, a bul- let in the body may be carried for any length of time without. the slightest in- convenience, as in thecnse of the late Mr. Wm. Jameson, who died in this village about three years ago, and from whom were taken, after death, a pistol hail that. was fired at. him during the rebellion of '37. and part. of a brace buckle that was driven into the wound. The Trent Vtillgr Canal. The Ottawa correspondent of the To- ronto Globe says that Mr. Rubidgc, the engineer in charge of the Murray Bay Canal and the Trent Valley Canal has returned to town with reports of the progress of the surveys, and gives an outline of the character of the latter work. which concludes as follows :â€" “ Three parties are now tanking ex- ploratory surveys and taking levels in order to find a practicable route for a Trout Valley Canal that. will utilise in the greatest. measure the natural advan- tages of this route. One of these par- tier-i has just, about completed the sur vey of the " Old Portage " between Likes Simcoe and Balsam. The second party. engaged between Petcrbnrnugh and Mad Lnkc have reached Nassau. The third party is working from Heel- i-y's l’alls to Chisholui's Rapids. They report the prospects for a practicable canal much better than was expected, wuur poo/u, etc, a considerable diver- gence from the mute then contemplated will be «necessary in order to obviate the necessity of paying large land and property damages. At. Campbellford and l’etcrbnrough the line originally clllllt'lllplnled has been occupied with milling c~tnblishmeots As the surveys cannot be completed this season, it is understood the engineers have been di. rooted to confine their future operations ot‘this year to the more difficult seo~ lliom. the reports upon which must. c- l mutually decide whether the works will 1 be prr-Ceuded with, and what. their char- zicu-r will be. The greatest engineer- ing difiieulties of the route are said to exist. in the neighbourhood ol Peterbor. ougll. and from Matshedock Bay to Lake Huron." Improve Your Stock. There are three great advantages a- bout farming which, in our opinion, more than compensate for all in draw- backs. The first of these is. that there is no IOCIl competition ; the second, that the land increase-s in value you by your, instead of depreciating like 3 man- ; ufncturer's machinery or a mechanic's itmls; and the third, that the surplus produce can always be sold for cash. Sometimes there is no surplus, which is on for all animals intended for food, as they are worth so much per pound, whether big-or little, if in condi- tion; but it is difl'creut with bones. the uudcruised being hard to get rid of. while for those of sixteen bands or up- wards there in: steady-demand. This week then won a buyerâ€"sham Chicago, in: heirâ€"iii) the village. and although his visit was advertised beforehand and several horses were brought in for his approval. only a solitary one was up to his requirements, and for that he paid the handsome sum of 8150. No doubt he could have got a good many for 8100 each. but they were not the kind he wanted, and he would not take them at any price. Of course there are a few good horses in this vicinity, but they are in the bands of men who need them and are not willing to sell them even at their full value, as they do not know where to replace them. The vast ma- jority of horses are what are called “ general purpose " animals, which is undersde to mean that they will do, in " a sort ofa kind of" a way, for any kind of work required of them; but. the animals for which there is a ready sale are those specially adapted to some par ticular service. As long as Canadian farmers were raising horses solely for their own use the kind they have did reasonably well, as they were able to work ordinary land and perform short journeys at a speed of five or six miles an hour; but. now that there is not only a foreign market for superior classes of animals, but buyers are scouring the country in search of them, it is time that. all should endeavor to reap a share of the profits to be derived from supply- ing the demand. Light. fast. horses are of but little use on a farm, and might be left to those who could make a spe- cialty of raising them ; but. fine large animals worth $300 or more the span, and that. would pay for their keep from the time they were broken in until sold, might just as easily be raised as the present uondescripts, which are “ Jacks- of-alltrudes and masters of none." m Condensdd News. -â€"-Cannington has long been in wnnt ofa lock-up, and the council has at. last decided to build one. â€"Sherifi Kempt is home again, much improved in health by his lengthy visit. to Preston Springs. â€"Aoother new engine for the Mid- land Railway arrived in- Port. A Hssvv Snowsu.â€"There was a splendid rain on Saturday last, just. in time to prevent well:- from going dry, garden stuff from pcrishing, and house- wives from being reluctantly compelled to use hard water for washing purposes. Of course it is impossible to please everybody, and the rain came at an in- convenient period for some of our farm- ing friends; but it was much wanted, and did ugrcat deal more good than harm. Quiball,‘ one of our village cartcrs, has a new wagon. and it is perfectly gorgeous, being so brilli not with red paint that it fairly makes one wink to look at it. Mr: Quiball says the. old waggou. which was a good one in its day. was getting .son weak to carry the heavy loads his ooasienoc im- pelled him to pile upon it, and so, in order to preserve his peace of mind, he applied to M r. Saudford, who turned him out. a first rate article, with all the latest improvements, calculated to give lusting satisfaction to the owner and make the gsllant grey feel proud of his attachment to it. Runawav.â€"-Last Monday morning, about 9 o‘clock, a mare with harness on and parts of two shafts dragging at her heels suddenly came from Bond street on to Colborne street. and galloped a long in a meandering and undecided manner, as if she didn't know.where to so, and was caught and stopped withâ€" out much difficulty opposite Mr. Mun- oiog's store. The animal belonged to Mr. Joseph Pogue, of Verulum, two of whose childrenâ€"a boy about nine years of age and a. girl three or louryears olderâ€"were driving to the Falls. with some eggs, and on Bond street hostili- ties commched between the boy and the mare in consequence of the former striking the latter a sudden blow with the whip. The first. kick given by the indignant. quadruped broke one of the shafts and the other soon after snapped in consequence of the buggy slewing around, and the mare then ran away as above stated. The boy, getting frightened, jumped to the ground, and in so doing was slightly hurt by one of the wheels, which struck his back ; but the girl kept her seat until the bugg' ran against the sidewalk, when she quietly stepped out. and was followed by the eggs, which of course were smashed by the fall. .-â€"-m_ -._.._ The Dynamite Army. CHICAGO, Aug. 5.â€"The secret con- claveof Irishman continued in session toâ€"day, and ndditio‘unl facts leaked out concerning the objects. There are pres ent :â€"Johu Warren, of Lowell, Muss ; Thomas Quinn, of Peoria (codabourer of Crowc) ; George West, of Providence (lawyer, and secrectary of the branch Land League); Rev. Father Beals, St. Louis; George Cunningham, New Ha- ven; and many other well-known agi- tutors. It. transpires that these men are the dynamite crowd; that. their dc- liberatious are not as to whether dyna- mite shall be used against. England. but as to the most feasible way of using it. In the discussion no doubt was ex- pressed of there being plenty of Irish- meu who would accept the pussibility or even certainty of death by it. that. they might. do great and serious damage to England. Plans were elaborated, it is said, by which dynamite was to be fur- nished and used on vessels and in cities They couritleretl the question how to get butter uiuuul'actories ol infernal ma- chines iu the United States and France. Their financial Condition was reported sound. The treasury contains nearly $100,000 for a skirmishng fund, and a committee has been appointed to pro- vide for the future and levy a tax to raise more. A delegation of the city priests waited on the members of the concluvu to-duy. and begged them with solemn udjuratinns and impressive ur- guments to dc~ist lrmn their plots and adjourn at once. They refused to lis- ten to such argument and advice, say- ing they came here for business, and were determined to accomplish their purpose. The meeting will probably terminate toâ€"nmrrow. TROY, N. Y., Aug. 6.â€"â€"Willium Keo- nedy, inventor, 'of this city. it is report- ed, invented the sinking apparatus for the Fenian rntu which was found in New York bay. Kennedy says the ram Was a miniature model, with a defect. which can be remedied by an invention known only to one man. The larger vessel will carry forty men, can be provisioned for six months, can run seven miles an hour, stay a thousand feet under water for four hours, and after ten minutes' res- pite on the water can go down again for four hours more. The project was con- oonceived three years ago. Kennedy was born in Ireland, has nineteen med- als and twenty-one diplomas for scale making, an_d is an enthusiastic Fenian. LONDON, Aug. 7.â€"â€")luch uneasiness is felt. throughout England on account of the belief that infernal machines have been extensively smuggled through several ports, and are probably now in the hands of men who know how to use them. A close watch is being kept. on all Government ofices and public build- ings. One story is that'thc Duke of Ed- inburgh as well as the Prince of Wales has been marked out for destruction. and another, that clock-work machines have been secreted in Westminster Ab boy. Important Usual Scheme. .BALTIMORE TO BE DIRECTLY CONNECT- ED WITH THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. BALTDIOBS. Aug. 5.â€"The early construction of the ship canal connect.- ing Chesapeake Bay with Delaware Bay. shortening the distance to the o. ceao from this port by 225 miles. is now assured. The Swalras route has by Mr. White. and the separation of been selected, requiring only a cut of An Invulnaruble' Some very interesting experiments have been lately carried out in Leipsic with a cuiunâ€"madc of: newly invent- ed preparation of'r'teel. The ,mfal of the cuirasu is only about 350th: of an inch thick, and is lined inside with a thin layer of wool. The cuinss itself is fourteen inches wide and ten inches high (being intended to protect only the heart and lungs), and weighs two and a quarter pounds. Eleven sounds were fired at it at a distance of 1'25 yards from a Martini breechdoading rifle ; and of eight bullets which strwck the cuirass only two pierced the metal, while even these were completely fist- tened and remained in the woollen lin- inz; so that a man wearing the «aims: would have been uninjured. An Ocean Steamer for Lake Su- parlor. One. sign of the great increase in the shipping business of Lake Superior is to be seen in the fact that a large ocean steamer is at. present passing through the canal on her way up to the lake. The steamship Cumpunt'u has already passed the new lock gates, but her length is too great for the upper locks. and it has accordingly been decided to cut her in two pieces and take them up one at. n time. The work of dividing the water tank has already been begun the engine ball into two parts will soon be in progress. The contract for the latter has not been placed, but whoever obtains it will also have the work oI putting the Uampaniu together. Claim for Damages. MONTREAL. Aug. 7.â€"Dntne Alexan- driue Filiatruult, through her counsel, Messrs. Archambault ill. David, has tak- en an action in the Superior Court. a- gainst Messrs. A. \V. Ogilvie and W. W. Ogilvie, claiming 810,000 damages as the price of her husband's life. Her husband, Mugloire Saariol, carter, was. in the employ of the -0:ilvle, and was killed in their mill 0o Februa- ry 28th last. by the falling of a heavy beam through the fn--t, the plaintiff al- leges, of the rope and chain holding it not. being sufficiently strong. Sauriol at his death was 46 years of age, and his widow was lull. in poverty with elev- en children. Kangaroo Soup. Anyone in London desiring to indulge. in a basin of kangaroo-tail mop cm do so much more readily than if he \vere living in any of the great Autipodeau towns. Several of the Colonial meat companies have made the tail oI [Ilt' kangaroo an article of export for conâ€" sumers in England. and a small outlay will place a Londoner in possession ufa luxury‘of Australia which the colonists there can generally obtain only after a hard day's work on horseback. As a matter of fact it is the rarest thing pris- siblc to see a kangaroo hanging in a Colonial butcher‘s shop; and kangaroo tail soup is a rare item on the hill-ol- fure ot'u lltlbourue or Sydney dining- room. The soup is a thing which, if once tasted. is to be lorever remember ed. Prepared as it ought to he, with a due admixture ol white wine and the yokes of hard-boiled eggs. it is richer than that. made by the hare or grouse. with a peculiar and indescribable flaVor. But exc-pt the liver and digestion be sound. it is not. to be partakeu of with impunity. No pen could dojustice to its appetite-inspiring aroma audits gas- trooouiically quite " too utter " savour. 0 Manitoba. CANADA PACIFIC PROSPECTS. W INNIPEO, Aug. 5.â€"Additional par- ticulars to those already telegraphed have been learned respecting the busiâ€" m-ss transacted by the Canada Pacific Railway Directors at their meeting held here this week. Besides the other works spoken of in a previous dcspatch, the coustru--tiou of a line from Winni peg to Portage la Prairie in a direct. course for the west junction with the existing main line at the latter place was determined upon and ordered to be proceeded with immediately. The prices at which lands are to be sold also occupied the directors’ attention. Ac- tual settlement will be. encouraged by selling at $2 50 per acre. with 50 per cent. rebate on all land brought under cultivation within three years. A high- er pricc will bu charged non-settlers, to discourage land sharks and I'llpecula- tors.
