Oh hey, you're looking for the legal, right? Take a look, here it is: enealogy is about more than just tracing one's family tree -- it is about discovering heritage, creating a family narrative and preserving legacy. The search for family history has captivated generations of Canadians, and is growing in popularity as more and more seek to connect with their past. In many ways, genealogy is an essential and often primary learning tool for creating an understanding of who we are. For residents looking to get started with their own research, Oakville Public Library is an excellent place to start. Out of the Oakville Room at its Central Branch, the library provides access to a variety of records, books and microfilm that can be of great assistance in navigating one's family history. Cemetery and church records, passenger and immigration lists as well as census data are included in this local collection, available for in-library use during regular hours (with a valid library card). Helpful online resources can also be accessed at all library branches, like Ancestry Library Edition, which provides access to a searchable catalogue of records (including military), vital statistics and other data from historical databases around the world. "With so much information available, getting started with genealogical research can be daunting," said Elise C. Cole, local collections librarian at Oakville Public Library. "To make things easier, the library continuously offers relevant and informative workshops for residents who wish to explore their ancestry." The library recently introduced a variety of new ancestry-related programs including a workshop for residents interested in researching their Irish family history. Preserving Family Heirlooms (May 26) and Quebec Genealogical Records (June 9) workshops were also added to its spring program lineup. To register for either workshop or for more information about the genealogyrelated services, visit www.opl.ca or call the Central Branch at 905 815-2042. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library
