www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, April 7, 2016 | 42 World Health Day 2016 zeroes in on diabetes Follow social media campaign using #diabetes hashtag on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook This year for World Health Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) is putting the focus on diabetes. Every year, the WHO selects a priority area of global public health concern as the theme for World Health Day, which is today (Thursday, April 7), the birthday of the Organization. The theme for World Health Day 2016 is diabetes, a non-communicable disease (NCD) directly impacting millions of people globally, mostly in low- and middle-income countries, according to the WHO. Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose, which may over time lead to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. The prevalence of diabetes has been steadily increasing in the past few decades, the WHO states on its website (www.who.int). The organization hopes by increasing awareness of the disease, it can reverse this trend through targeted prevention and appropriate care. World Health Day objectives This year's World Health Day objectives include working with WHO member states and civil society partners to: · increase awareness about the rise in diabetes, and its consequences, in particular in lowincome and middle-income countries; · trigger a set of specific, effective and affordable actions to tackle diabetes. These will include steps to prevent diabetes and diagnose, treat and care for people with diabetes; · launch the first WHO Global report on diabetes, which will describe the burden and consequences of diabetes and advocate for Health "Connected to your Community" The theme for World Health Day 2016 is diabetes, a noncommunicable disease (NCD) directly impacting millions of people globally, mostly in low- and middleincome countries.... In addition to the main report, there will be country profiles on the WHO's website in six United Nations languages. This year, there will also be a social media campaign to allow people to engage in an online discussion through Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and other platforms, using the #diabetes hashtag and sharing images and stories related to their diabetes experience.
