IRHS students to commemorate Vimy Ridge battle by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 15 | Thursday, April 7, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Students from Iroquois Ridge High School will commemorate the 99th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge with a special walkathon Saturday (April 9). Beginning at 10:20 a.m., approximately 27 students will make a 3.6-kilometre trek from the 1123 Glenashton Dr. high school to the Royal Canadian Legion, Oakville Branch 114 at 36 Upper Middle Rd., E. The 3.6-km journey is intended to commemorate the 3,600 Canadian soldiers killed at Vimy. The First World War engagement raged from April 9-12, 1917 in northern France, near Arras, and saw the Canadian Expeditionary Force wrestle the strategically important ridge away from the German defenders. Iroquois Ridge High School Canadian history teacher Jovan Djurdjevic recently spoke with the Oakville Beaver about the importance of students commemorating this historic event. "Despite the fact the battle took place (almost) 100 years ago, and our students are 14-17 years old, they very much recognize its importance and its contribution to the birth of our nation. Prior to the battle of Vimy Ridge, Canadians saw themselves, and were It's important to commemorate the soldiers who sacrificed for our country and also it's very much important to remember and pass down this significant history to our youths.... Vimy is a unifier for all Canadians. Vimy is on the back of our most commonly-used bill, the $20 bill, and is commonly referred to as the birth of our nation. This is incredibly significant. During the walkathon, students will carry banners, flags and wear special T-shirts to mark the occasion. The Oakville Legion has offered to hold a lunch for the students upon their arrival, at which point one of the students will deliver a speech. Approximately 20 of these walkers will participate in a school trip in April 2017 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Students will visit France, Netherlands and Germany between April 6-15, 2017. The highlight of the trip will be the April 9, 2017 commemoration at the Vimy Ridge Memorial where some 10,000 people, including the heads of state of Canada, France and Britain, are expected to be in attendance. Djurdjevic said this will be a historic event and the Iroquois Ridge students will be representing their town, province and country with pride. Jovan Djurdjevic seen by others, as merely British subjects. Vimy was the first time all four Canadian regiments, (100,000) men from across Canada, lived, ate, prepared and fought together shoulder-to-shoulder as brothers. This experience and the great victory led to our sense of nationhood," said Djurdjevic. "It's important to commemorate the soldiers who sacrificed for our country and also it's very much important to remember and pass down this significant history to our youths. If we don't teach them and give them opportunities to feel and experience the significance of Vimy, it will be a loss for them and for us. Vimy is a unifier for all Canadians.
