www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, March 24, 2016 | 20 Retired Town councillor found a haven in the garden continued from p.6 enjoyed our engagement in the evolution of that organization." Esther said Farley's good nature went beyond council chambers, noting on one occasion, he picked up a man at a bus stop on a cold day and offered to give him a ride without knowing his destination first. "He said, `It can't be too far if you're taking the Oakville bus,'" said Esther. "He did things like that." After his time on council came to an end, Farley volunteered regularly with the St. Vincent De Paul Society, a Catholic organization dedicated to helping the needy and disadvantaged. During Farley's funeral, which was attended by approximately 500 mourners, Esther said some of the people her husband had helped approached her and told her they looked forward to Farley's visits, not because he brought them the food they needed, but because he made them laugh. Esther said Farley's sense of humour was something to be reckoned with. She remembers during one heated argument the couple had, she had said, "I'm leaving and I'm not coming back," to which Farley responded, "`I see. Can I come with you?'" "Of course, that would make me laugh," said Esther. "You couldn't get angry with him. He always had a comeback." Farley was also active in the community serving as president of the Probus Club of Oakville and a member of St. Michael's Church, where he sang in the choir. During a Town council meeting earlier this month, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton extended condolences to Farley's family. "I attended his funeral today to represent us (council). It was a very fine testimony to a man who was always characterized as the perfect gentlemen when he was on council for 20 years," said Burton. "He participated so fully in the life of his church that the priest said there was no aspect of church life he had not volunteered for or worked in." When Farley had some spare time, he would unwind by listening to opera, taking pictures or tending to his garden, which Esther said would draw in passersby with its bright and beautiful flowers. Esther said she doubts the family garden will be the same as it was under her husband's care. Your favourite just got better!
