www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, March 24, 2016 | 18 T H E L A S T S K A T E | photos by Michael Ivanin - special to the Beaver Oakville residents were invited to share their Oakville Arena memories as part of two free public skates at the 65-yearold rink last Sunday (March 20). Refreshments were served in the Pine Room where people could sign a mural. Oakville Arena opened in 1951 at 133 Rebecca St. and has served as a community hub since. It's one of only four remaining arenas in Ontario with a distinctive wooden truss roof system designed by Norman Otto Hipel, an Ontario politician and builder who patented the roof system in 1928. Following extensive public consultation in 2014, Town council approved a resident-supported plan to revitalize and expand the facility while maintaining its historical features. The renovated Oakville Arena is to re-open in 2018. For more information, visit oakville.ca. Pictured above, from left, Jack Molas signs a mural to be hung in the renovated arena when it opens.
