A former Oakville resident, who now resides in the Town of Madalena, which is located on the island of Pico in the Portuguese Azores, is working to bring the two towns closer together through art and artists. Terry Costa, a graduate of Sheridan College and the University of Toronto now runs MiratecArts, an arts organization that develops various projects and runs the largest arts festival in the Atlantic Ocean, Azores Fringe. The Sheridan grad returned to Oakville last month to meet with Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and others to lay the groundwork for the creation of the Oakville-Madalena Friendship Club. "Oakville is pleased to celebrate its Portuguese connection through the Oakville-Madalena Friendship Club," said Burton. "It's great to hear how Oakville's community spirit continues to connect residents, even when they are not in town." The club, he said, is about making connections between the two towns, particularly through art, and the first project will involve a sharing of images between Madalena and Oakville.
