The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e s d a y N o v e m b e r 14, 2001 - A 3 Trafalgar Memorial to live again in new north Oakville location By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STA FF Riziero Vertolli ·Oakville Beaver Youngsters from St. Andrew School sang a prayer to peace at the site where the Trafalgar Memorial arbour will be reconstructed. The past, present and future all converged in a chilly north Oakville parkette Friday morning for a ceremony recognizing the future site of the Trafalgar Memorial. Residents o f the former Trafalgar Township, current Oakville dignitaries and children from two area schools all played a part in setting the stage for the monument which will honour local war dead. When erected at the intersection of Oak Park and Central Park - likely within the next two years - the "arbour gate" memorial will feature the bronze plaque and honor roll of those who perished in both World Wars that hung in the old Trafalgar Memorial Hall. The `Trafalgar Memorial" lettering from above the front door will also be incorporated. Trafalgar Memorial Hall - which was located on the south east comer of Dundas Street and Trafalgar Road - was demol ished in October 1999. On Friday, Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll said the monument will be made with salvaged materi als and will allow valuable local history to live on in a public setting. "This is the beginning of the fulfillment of the promise made to the people of Trafalgar Township," said Ward 5 Councillor Janice Caster. A special plaque denoting the historic significance of the Hwy. 5/Trafalgar Road site was also unveiled on Friday. The plaque will be affixed to the new Bank of Montreal building on the site As part of the ceremony, students from Post's Comers Public School recited the poem In Handers Fields while the choir from St. Andrew School sang a prayer to peace based on an aboriginal poem. Both performances were fitting, said Mayor Ann Mulvale, considering the ceremony's proximity to Remembrance Day. Therefore it's appropriate that as Oakville builds new neigh bourhoods to the north, residents will be able to pay their respects and not lose sight as they go about their lives, she added. Trafalgar Memorial Hall was constructed in 1949 and in 1958 a 30-by-40 inch bronze plaque was added: "In memory of those of Trafalgar Township who gave their lives while serving their king and country in the two World Wars." The hall was used by Trafalgar Township as its municipal offices. After Trafalgar Township and Oakville amalgamated in 1962, the site was used as municipal offices until 1966. Mulvale said the building was also the scene of the 1978 Ontario Municipal Board hearing that set the stage for north ern growth, including Oak Park. Severely damaged by a transport truck in 1986 and no longer needed by the Town, the property was declared surplus. At that time, then Town of Oakville facilities manager Bud Brown promised Trafalgar Township residents that the memo rial would not be cast by the wayside.
