Finalists last year, juniors go all the way Oakville Trafalgar junior boys volleyball team made it a clean sweep in Monday's Halton finals, defeating Georgetown handily in two straight games. The senior Red Devils also won their Halton final, 2-1 over Georgetown. "Oh yeah, you don't see that very often," said senior coach Maria Seto, who coached the juniors last season." It happened with the girls volleyball pro gram in the early 90s with coach Seto taking a senior team to OFSAA while the juniors also won their Halton championship. Senior Team: Chris Dunlop (#2), Colin Granby (#7), Justin Lintem (#12), Fraser Matthews (#6), Devon Miller (#4), Conor Murphy (#8), Dan Murray (#10), James Russell (#2), Mark Shimoda (#9), Chris Thomson (#11), Gabe Wee (#5) and James Wood (#1). This will be good for our senior program. These kids will move up and really help us next year. And most of my (senior) kids are coming back next year. We'll be really strong next year, we're only losing a few." The seeds of the junior team's success were sown the previous year in which they made it all the way to the Halton junior final, losing to Loyola. "Of that team there were about four kids remaining, so they had some experience. They had a couple of good middle hitters, #11 Peter Dionisio and #10 Jamie Zyla, and experienced setters -- Lapczynski was a setter for me last year -- and power in Mark Streeter. "I knew right from the beginning they should be a contender." Like the senior team, they were undefeated in league and playoff action. Junior Team: Adam Lapczynski (#1), Mark Streeter (#2), Josh Lintem (#4), Tim Fox (#5), Blake Abawi (#6), Matt Harrison (#8), Stuart Moorman (#9), Jamie Zyla (#10), Peter Dionisio (#11), Jon Sheridan (#12), Graham Penley (#13) and Mark Delottinvilie (#15). 0THS preparing for re-match with Georgetown (Continued from page B13) 'kFeaturing'k WNBA Houston Comets Assistant Coach: Kevin Cook, and Marvin Harvey N.C.C.P. For Oakville Trafalgar, however, there would be one advantage in a G eorgetown win in that the game would be played back in Halton, and perhaps at Sheridan College. But if St. M ary's should win today, the Friday game will definitely be held in Hamilton. Georgetown is the defending OFSAA cham ps, and it took O akville Trafalgar three games to w restle away their Halton title, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8. An O akville com eback attem pt in the second game that would have given them the sweep fell ju st short. "In the third game, we came back strong and played our regular game. "I think the boys, they wanted to take it in two but, you know, G eorgetow n is a good team -- they were OFSAA winners last year. "T hey're strong, they have a lot o f experience, they've gone to a num ber o f m ajor tournam ents. They haven't won any, but have done fairly well in m ost o f them and so they have that experience over us." W ith less im pressive credentials going into the season, Oakville Trafalgar had to go about their cham pionship season in quieter fashion. "W e've been to a few tournam ents, as well, but we haven't played against some o f the top team s simply because nobody knew about us." Their best tourney result was at their own tourney, los ing in the cham pionship game "against a tough team from Kitchener, Forest H eights." In their own league and playoff action, they fashioned an undefeated record. "We really haven't been tested in league but we have been im proving," said coach Seto. "You can see that they're getting tougher and tougher mentally, and match tougher." In the H alton final she thought the team came together well. "O ur num ber one really cam e through -- Jam es Wood. He certainly played an exceptional role (M onday) night." W hile the team 's main hitter, Dan Murray, took a while to get going, he did "come through in the third game for us, very w ell." First year senior setter Devon M iller "kept his com po sure, played an extrem ely good game, good serving game. "Everybody held their own. Justin Lintern blocked some great balls. We dug som e good balls. As a team we really played well together. Substitutes w ent in, did the job. It worked out for us." And now all they have to do -- is do it all over again. "There are a couple o f things in our offence that I 'd like to change. "I'd like to do a couple more variations and ju st be aware that they're probably going to try a variety of attacks to see if they can get through ... "W e're ju st going to have to focus on blocking them. T hey're a. small team -- they're fast. "Just tlo c k them down and ju st keep the pressure on them at all times. "And I think, overall, we have m ore pow er than they do com ing from every position. "I think w e'll ju st play our gam e and work hard for every point. "We dug a lot o f good balls w hen they did get past the block so we just have to continue to do that."
