8 - The Oakville Beaver W eekend, Sunday N o ve m b er 11, 2001 Q ) OAKVILLE (9 0 5 ) 8 4 5 -6 6 0 1 Matching beret designed for draw (Continued from page 3) the mother o f three daughters aged 5 to 11. "She was from Great Britain, but we were like sisters growing up," said Beckett. Another cousin also had breast cancer, but survived the disease. Though October was breast cancer awareness month for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, a national effort that's signified by a pink ribbon, Beckett said it was just too close to her cousin's death. "Now I'm a month late with the fundraiser," she said. She still hopes the draw will raise $500 for breast cancer research and will also become an annual event for Chelsea's. "I also got involved because we have a lot of customers who have been through chemo with cancer, though it's not always breast cancer ... you know, because w e're a hat shop," said Beckett. "It's become part o f our everyday life. Sometimes it can be quite over whelming," said Beckett, noting that Chelsea's unique wares are often sought by those who have lost their hair to cancer treatment or need head size adjustments to their fashions as their hair grows in again. In its own effort to support the fundraising campaign, Chelsea's designed a hand-made, sequined beret that also uses the target logo, and it, too will be part o f the Nov. 30 draw. The handbag is worth approximate ly $200. The beret would retail for $100. The hand-bag that's been featured widely in fashion magazines can be used as a bag or as a clutch, wallet or even a make-up bag. The bag itself is hand-made, lined with silk and its beading displays the target logo o f the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign. The target symbol is turquoise, royal blue and silver in color. Both the beret and handbag are in those colours. Tickets are three for $15 or 5 for $20. The draw will take place on Nov. 30. To purchase a ticket, call the store at 905-849-8982 or drop by at 137 Lakeshore Rd. E. "We ask people to please help raise money and awareness for breast can cer programs and buy a few tickets for this draw. The proceeds will be donat ed to finding a cure," said Beckett. The former instructor at Sheridan College has been dubbed "the hat lady o f Oakville" in some circles. She began doing custom work from a stu dio shop on Church Street, before expanding to a shop on Randall Street and then moving last May to her store on Lakeshore Road. Proceeds from Chelsea's draw will go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In Canada, an estimated 19,500 women will develop breast cancer this year and 5,500 will die from it.
