"Six Nations Public Library 40th Anniversary"

The Six Nations Library celebrated its 40th Anniversary this past Saturday. The doors opened at 11 AM and community members were invited in to enjoy the late morning festivities.

Approximately 20 people, including community members, library workers, and former workers, squeezed into the libraries main-floor rooms.

Sabrina Saunders, the library's director, headed the event and spoke about the library's changes over the years. She spoke about the library's founding Board that was in place in 1967-1968.

Mona Staats, Six Nations Elder, was at the meeting and recalled working for the library at that time.

"I was adult librarian, children's librarian, secretary, treasurer and on off days I cleaned the library," said Staats. "It was almost like a home away from home and it was a pleasure to serve the community."

After the speeches, the small gathering was offered lunch and a chance to explore the library.

The library is still undergoing many changes, that include completely overhauling and automating the catalogue, working towards becoming an accredited library within Ontario and, finally eventually moving into a new facility.
