It was almost an afterthought last Tuesday night when the Kinnear-Leasing squad blitzed Barrow's Insurance 7â€"0 to win the Richmond Hill Men's Fastball League championship in three straight games. W'I‘h‘e’y réally won it when they sneaked into the fourth and last playoff spot a few.v_veeks ago. Kinnear was literally un» beatable after that sweeping by defending champion Town Auto llody in two straight before meeting Barrow‘s. HEAVY Pitcher Dave Webster threw his weight around both on the mound and al bat in lhal wind-up formality spinning a seven-hitter and also thumping a three-run out fer dubious glof‘y will be’six teams. In order of nice guys, not necessarily ability, they are The Bombers. Old Jays, The Misfits. Sudsers‘ the Ball Machine arid-or The'J‘Red Eyes. There‘s still four days to go and already tension is mounting. I got so nervous the other day I cleaned my teeth and then had something to eat. The worst part is I put the Sandwich Spread in the medicine cabinet and the tooth paste in the refrigerator. With my luck it‘ll stay there until I make my next sand- wich. I‘ll forget and probably think it’s meat spread. I just dunno. 1 ,L ,UL Jâ€" r Pï¬eï¬rllarps I should explain. I’m not all un-nerved about the current Montreal Expo-Pittsburgh Pirate baseball drama unfolding in the National Alfea‘gue.‘ It‘s much more vital than that. I'm talking about next Sunday‘s “Super Bowl†at the Town Park and Crosby. That‘s when the second annual Richmond Hill Slo-Pitch tournament unfolds, or is it folds up, for the year. iz-râ€"rivorrlvl-Slï¬kiidding. They‘re all nice guys. It's just that I‘m prejudiced because I‘m the batboy for The Bombers. It wasn‘t eaSy getting to be bgtboy: I'Vgér-néarï¬l;way \t’here by dropbing fly balls in right field, centre-field, left-field and second base. In one inâ€" ning. That‘s versatility. SUNDAY In any case the drama will begin Sunday at 9 am. at both the Town Park and Crosby. It‘ll be a double- elimination bash which means you play a minimum of two games. The BombersVare so confident of winning they're already planning an afternoon picnic with their mistresses. They open at Crosby against the Old Jays while the Red Eyes meet the Sudsers at the Town Park. Then it's the Ball Machine meeting the Misfits at 10:30 am. at the Town Park. You figure it out from there on. The final cham- pionship game will go at 7:30 pm. at the Town Park. TENSION I don‘t know about the other teams, but I know the Bombers are apprehensive at meeting the 01d Jays. That‘s mainly because the Old Jays bombed them something like 20-8 in final scheduled league game of the season last Sunday. ‘ ' It was due in part to the resurgence of Old Jays‘ outfielder Bill Greenhead. ‘ Greenhead. who holds the world record for striking out three times in one slo-pitch game, fought back with three long drives that drove the Bombers‘ pitcher back to the edge of the mound to grab. No wonder we're all ap- prehensive. FUN In all solemnity. Bill had some good hits and I suspect there will be a lot of hits, some great catches, and some. well. great misses. Sounds like an afternoon of fun so drop around and see history repeated. if not made It all starts at 9 am. door Coming up this Friday night there will be a “Sports Dance“ at the Richmond Hill Legion. Interested followers of the Ontario Fastball League might be surprised to learn that Owen Sound and Kit- chener are battling it out in the finals with the Sounders leading the best~ofâ€"five series by one game as of writing. Both St. Catharines. who won the Canadian Men’s Fastball championship, and Oshawa were eliminated Shocking. NICE GUY Oh yes. Rod Smith of Mutual Life of Richmond Hill, is happy with the way his Pleasantville girls softball team has gone this year. Great year girls and just to show his gratitude. Rod is going to sponsor you for the next 100 years. Nice guy, Rod. It’s going to be quite a week for sports. Just hope it doesn‘t snow. Finally. don‘t forget to buy an arena “Seatâ€.
