By PAT KELLY Action will be the name of the game next Saturday when Rich- mond Hill will be the scene of a giant “Soccer-a-lhon“ at Bayview Secondary School. Some 38 minor soccer teams from the Richmond Hill Club will take to the field at 9 am. and do battle. The games will kick off a drive by the minor soccer organization to raise $10,000 to pay the cost of redecorating and moving the old CNR Station on Centre Street Easti The station was donated by Richmond Hill Town Council and will be moved to a new site on Elgin Mills. It will be used as a It was one of those nights you sit around the office praying the phone will ring and some exciting sports story will suddenly materialize frorn‘ the other end. VA Monday tail-end of a long holiday weekend and what to do, what to write about. Please. Help me. Maybe, you think, something wonderful will happen. The phone will ring and someone will tell you the Wilson Niblett fastball team and Manager Russell “Casey” Cripps and his clan have miraculously won their 10th straight game and are leading the Ontario Fastball League. ’ All the adrenalin just drains from me. What‘s it all about, Alfie? Slump back into the chair realizing all my troubles are mere specks in the sea of life compared with losing a budgie bird. “Is it to'o late to make the paper this week? We‘ve just lost our budgie bird." Who cares whether we have championship teams, whether soccer referees are lousy or not, whether we win this or that. It’s the game of life that counts. Losing budgie birds. 61' the same with the Dynes Jewellers in the Beaches Fastball League. Happy news is what I need._ Then it happens: The phone rings and I hurriedly grab it. This could be the big moment. I hear this female voice saying: :And I know what the woman is going through. I once had a budgie bird Peter. He could talk, too. None of the neighbors could understand him but Ihdid. He was a nice bird but doomed to disaster. He had a penchant for flying into dishwater. You’d be scraping the dregs of dinner off the plates when you’d suddenly hear a whir of little wings followed by a splat that would threaten to start a tidalwave. Peter was in the dishwater again. Out of sight in the murky depths. ‘ SCOOP You‘d have to scoop for him. He was usually going down for the third time before I’d get to him. But he was a survivor. What a bird. He was always spotting himself in mirrors and flying to meet his first real romance. I guess we had him for two or three years and then one day he became ill and died. Like losing a member of the family. He gave up the ghost lying on the palm of my hand, a couple of tiny squeaks and it was all over. We buried him in a match box out behind the garage. COURAGE So I know how this woman is feeling right now. Courage. He’s probably out looking for his first real romance. Birds are like that. He’ll be back. SOCCER NEWS Let‘s see now, back to the grind. Good news from Paul Giles and his Richmond Hill Garry Owen Senior Girls soccer team who will be competing in the Ontario Cup finals next Sunday in London, Ontario. Crash. End Of rbmance. We’d have to scrape him off the floor. The good news, of course, is that they are there. Paul believes it‘s the first time a Richmond Hill soccer team has ever reached the Ontario Cup finals. That’s great. Just hope the girls can pull it off. I need a champion, real bad. More on this next week. SOCCER-A-THON Speaking of minor soccer, the Richmond Hill Club will be launching its kickoff drive to raise $10,000 for that CNR station this Saturday. The station. of course, was given to them by town council and will be used as the club‘s headquarters. They need the money to fix it up. That‘s why a big “Soccer-a-thon” is being held Saturday at Bayview Secondary School with some 38 local teams participating. The action begins at 9 am. For details, see elsewhere on these pages. There will also be a mammoth garage sale at the old fire hall on Wright Street. That's to raise funds for the A. Beattie Minor Atoms‘ trip to a Christmas tournament in Florida. Sounds like a big weekend. Be there, everywhere. FOOTBALL Finally, Ray King of the Aurora Bombers' Midget Football team is looking for Richmond Hill recruits ages 16, 17 years. He‘ll be holding workouts at Richmond Hill High School every Wednesday at 6:30 pm. If you’re interested drop around tonight. The team is in its second year of operation and plays in the Ontario Midget Football League. Really, finally, don‘t forget the annual Richmond Hill Men's Fastball League tournament which starts this Friday night at the Town Park. Should be some in- teresting ball. The Niblett team picked up three wins in four tries before losing 3-0 to Oshawa MCL and lefty Pete Landers who spun a perfect game in their direction. Loser was Paul Wannamaker who allowed five hits. Landers struck out 14 batters. Richmond Hill opened with an 11-inning 2-1 win over Grimsby and Bob Domik with Wan- namaker going the route and giving up nine hits. He struck out three batters. Certainly. a girl's Ieam.“ Dell-Aquila‘s big goal gave the pionship rivals of 1972, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Richmond Hill won the World‘s title by defeating Cedar Rapids. This time out the story was much the same with Wan‘ namaker limiting the American team to four hits. Richmond Hill could only manage three hits of their own. Their two runs came in the sixth inning as Colin Wood and Mickey Hancock walked. Ron Scnobb then doubled with the first runner safe at home as the ball came loose on the throw-in. Hancock then raced home on the same play. A big déubleplay in the seventh inning stifled 3 Cedar Rapids rally. LANDERS Then came the loss to Landers in the semi finals. Oshawa went on to lose the championship game to Hamilton Waxers. In OFL league action Wilson Niblett played at Grimsby in a doubleheader losing 3-1 in the first game and tying 3-3 in the second one. Richmond Hill is at home next Tuesday to Owen Sound for a doubleheader. Game time is 7:30 pm. The Saturday night game has been cancelled. Section B EMOTIONAL “II was quite an emotional moment for everyone." said Giles who handles the team along with coach Don Kavanagh. “St. Andrew‘s has knocked us out in the Semifinals for the past two seasons.“ r But it was a different story this time out as The Hill girls, fresh from 4-0 and 6-1 Cup triumphs over Welland and Forest City. hauled the favored Scarboro team to a standstill. l-0 Jackie Tersigni put Richmond Hill in front on a cross-over from Maria D’Onofrio. “It was a beautiful effort by Jackie,“ said Giles. “She stopped the ball with her left foot and kicked it with her right. The ball sailed right into the corner. St. Andrew‘s tied the game to set up the dramatic winning goal by Dell-Aquila. She was fed the ball by Karen Banks and got a quick shot off with her left foot and it also went into the corner. “It was a fine effort by Mary,“ said Giles, “as she normally kicks with her right foot." NEXT That was the clincher which will send Richmond Hill to London next Sunday and a 2:30 pm. game to decide who will represent the province in the Canadian championships at a later date. "We're pretty optimistic that we can come up with the big one." continued Giles. “We have a very disciplined team. The girls listen to instructions and that‘s been a big reason for our success to date.“ The Richmond Hill team is a happy mi3t of youth and veteran players with the ages ranging all the way from 14 years to the oldest at 30 years. “We've been trying for the Ontario Cup for quite-a few seasons now." said Giles. I hope this is the year we finally do It.“ If you forgot to donate your wife's car you can still contact Scotty. er.
