The Centre at the King Campus does provide excellent day care and lab facilities. Surely as a community, we should look at this valuable resource and not allow it to be closed. Tie waiting lists fdr oxher day care centres of comparable quality have long waiting lists. Parents NEED to work, children NEED quality day care, students NEED quality lab facilities to pracrice what they are taught. The staff in the centre are all highly skilled, and through their instruction and example provide my children with the finest day care in theprovince; and provide the Early Childhood Education students with learning experiences that I am sure are unequated anywhere. The issues seem to me [0 be basic. ls Liberal punishing the victim I am writing con- cerning the Board of Governors of Seneca College‘s decision [0 close the King Campus Day Care Centre on July 31, I have worked in the Day Care field in York Region since November, 1969 in three different centres. During that time I earned a High Honours Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Seneca College Finch Campus. I believe the Board‘s decision will seriously affect the quality of the Early Childhood By so clearly iden- tifying the victims, you almosr invite further problems by making personal information very public â€" thieves‘ robbers and rapists presumably also read newspapers. On June 1, 1979, Seneca College announced that zhe King Campus Day Care Centre would be closing July 31, 1979, because it was operating at a financial deficit. As a working parent who has two young children attending this Centre, I would like to inform the communin of the loss of a valuable and much needed facility. The Day Care Centre at the King Campus is a lab facility' for the Early Childhood Education students at Seneca. James D. Ewing. Richmond Hill ED. NOTE: Accused people are not necessarily guilty people. although mention of their names in the media tends to make them so. If we were to write a story saying two people -â€" two victims â€" died in' a car accident. wouldn't you want to know who they were? Should we not tell you? If a person‘s house is burglarized. wouldn‘t you wonder where it was? Perhaps. it's in your neighborhood. and you. as a homeowner. wish to take extra precautions in protecting your property from a similar oc- currence. However. if you ask us who the burglar is. we must. in all honesty, answer “we don't know". And. if we don’t know, how dare we mention someone's name. just because the police THINK they know and have laid a charge? That’s a judge's job. not ours. Your point. nevertheless. is well taken. and we‘d like to hear other people‘s views as well. As such, it practises the philosophies of child care which the students are taught in class. I notice each week in The Liberal a column entitled “Police Briefs" which appears to sum- marize certain recent occurrences in our community. Your policy of giving names. addresses, possessions (and often their value) of many of the ‘victims‘ of various crimes. while allowing the accused and-or guilty parties to enjoy their Status protected by anonymity, continues to baffle and intrigue me. It seems to me (hat you punish the victim while prorecting the accused and-or guilty. __â€"â€"LETTERS= W9”??? of??? ’Yfi’Pfi’Yd. Changes starting July 1 mean that some people will have to work longer before they can qualify for Unemployment Insurance benefits. Please remember, these L'I changes aflect only those claims which start on or after July 1, 1979. And, the changes may or may nobapply to you. So please read on to see if you are affected. (You’ll find terms such as “Weeks of Work’,’ “Qualifying Period”, “Variable Entrance Requirement” (VER), and “Unemployment Rate” marked by an asterisk ('). For easier understanding, see the box “Explaining UI terms” at the end of this message.) Have you worked 20 weeks or more in your Qualifying Period”? If so, this message does not apply to you. For you, the number of weeks you need to qualify for regular UI benefits and for U1 ill- ness and maternity benefits, or the one-time benefit at age 65 has not changed. An exception to this would be if ybu were on a training course approved by the Canada Are you working for the first time ? To get UI benefits, you will usually need 20 Weeks’ Work“, no matter where you live Unless you worked at least zoweeks in the pastyear, these changes could apply to you. The Corporation of The Town of Richmond Hill C.D. Weldon, Clerk. Here are the details of those Changes ,StartingJuly1, there wfll be some changes made to Unemployment Insurance. In a given day your students have had direct access to King Campus Day Care facilities and now a valuable and mandatory experience will be cut from their learning process. This is presently provided for at your Lab School and I know of no other setting in the Region that could duplicate this service without compensation. King Campus is situated in an area which presents transportation problems to the Students. Many research projects involve intensive ob- servations of young children interacting successfully with their care givers. As a potential employer of Seneca graduates and a concerned member of Seneca King Campus campus can do this I ask you to postpone ahe decision until all plausible alternatives have been explored. E.C.E. Advisory Board I am willing to volunteer my time and expertise to explore an economically feasible solution to this problem. All no! at Map" «:01. On your last claim, you drew 15 weeks’ benefits before going back to work. Now, you would need the usual 12 weeks, plus three “extra” work weeks. (That's the difference between the 12 weeks you need- ed to work and the 15 weeks of benefits you drew. In total you would need 15 Weeks’ Work" to qualify again within one year. The most anyone needs anywhere is 20 weeks of work to qualify. Again, please remember, when the Unemployment Rate“ in your area is over 11.5 per cent, this rule won’t apply to you. You’ll need only 10 Weeks’ Work" to qualify for regular Ul benefits. Chickens at we lb. Smoked Bacon at 20: “1 Pork Chops at 20c lb. Spare Ribs at 20c lb. Just as a review, these points haven’t changed You may still get U1 illness and maternity benefits and the special benefit paid at age 65 if you’ve worked 20 weeks in your Qualifying Period‘. There’s still a two-week waiting period before UI benefits start. To get regular benefits, you must still be available for and looking for work each day you are on claim. You must report any work and earnings while on claim. If yours is classed as a new claim, you will need the usual 10 to 14 Weeks’ Work" depending on your local VER‘, plus up to six “extra” Weeks of Work‘. The number of “extra” weeks you’ll need depends on how many weeks you got on your previous UI claim. You need one “extra” week( up to a maximum of six) for every week you got over the VER" needed in your area. The weekly benefit rate was reduced to 60 per cent of your average insurable earnings (from 662/3 per cent). Most people employed for less than 20 hours a week are no longer covered by UI. Higher-income claimants may have to repay part of U1 benefits drawn in the 1979 tax year. This will only affect people whose income, including UI benefits, is over $20,670. This will be explained when you get your 1979 tax return.
