Port-aux-Basques got its name from the Basques fishermen who fished off the coast here in the early 1700s. If you have time to make a few side trips, the trip down the south coast about 40 miles to Rose Blanche will show you what a Newfoundland outport looks like. You’ll pass Isle aux Morts, so called because of a shipwreck there; Margaree, with its huge fish plant (ask for manager Gabe Billard and he'll cut you some fish steaks from a fish only hours out of the ocean and; if your nose can stand it. even give you a tour of the plant); Burnt Island, which is now joined by a causeway; Diamond Cove. where the glitter from a mountain of pure quartz can be seen far out to sea; and Harbour le Cou, immortalized in a ST. JOHN’S, Nfld. â€" Newfoundland is the placé that most ‘mainlanders’ say they would really like to visit someday, but the years drift by and someday never comes. It’s too far away, they say. and too expensive. Well, Newfoundland is as close as Florida, where thousands of Toron~ tonians go each year and. with the premium on the US dollar, it‘s probably cheaper. There are several ways to get there. You can fly to Montreal and connect with an Eastern Provincial Airways flight to Stephenville, Deer Lake, Gander or St. John’s. Air Canada has daily scheduled flights to St. John‘s and Gander. CN Marine operates passenger and car ferry services between North Sydney and Port-aux- Basques twice daily, three times daily at peak periods. The crossing takes six hours and costs $18 each way for a car. $6 for an adult. If you choose the night crossing, it costs $32 for a four~berth cabin. A good place to stop for breakfast is the Irving Station at the Deer Lake turnoff. The food here is excellent. Irving stations with restaurants are situated about every 30 miles along the highway and the food served, although not gourmet, is consistently good. The restaurants are run by local people and most of the food is home-made. The pies and cakes have to be tasted to be believed. At the mouth of the Codroy River is the town of Cape Anquille with the Anquille mountains rising steeply to the north. This multi~ million-dollar refinery was in production only a short time and is now bankrupt and abandoned. Shortly after leaving the park another side trip can be taken to Trinity. Trinity is the oldest settlement in North America, having been visited in 1501 and 1558 and finally settled toward the end of the 16th cen- tury. ‘ Another hour’s drive would get you to Terra Nova National Park, 153 square miles of forestland, lakes and coastline.
