For the past few years students have been of- fered the chance to enter the GAUSS math contest, which is set annually by the University of Waterloo and given to Grade 7 and 8 students. This year, thanks to the initiative of department head Val Chow and in- structor Roger Cote, Richmond Hill High sponsored the first Sonya Kovalevsky â€" math contest â€"â€" its own math quiz for students_ at the ‘l'fedder schools RHHS. The emphasis of the contest. which is 100 questions long. is not on competition or winning. but merely on stimulating young students' interest in mathematics.
