“When my Sugar Walks Down the Street.” and “Tip Toe through the Tulips.“ were just some of the numbers and acts performed by the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 375. Royal Canadian Legion, Richmond Hill, at their recent “The Show of Shows". The latter featured 21 numbers, just about evenly split between the complete cast and soloists. Tip toeing through all those tulips was Elsie Burnie. above. who was also one of the assistant producers. Olga Nickle has been painting. drawing and sculpting since she was fourteen, but has been showing her art for only the past 10 years. On display are mostly water colors. ink and pencil sketches. drawings and wood sculp- tures. l particularly.liked the. ink and pencil sketches, as they show a facility of craftsmanship and yet include a feeling for the subject that is so often missing in this kind of art work. Superb quality The. sculptures in wood. however‘ are my lav0urites. The titles are. self- explanatoryâ€"“Mother and Baby", “Family”, “Mother and Daughter". “Lovers”. They are carved from butternut, (white walnut.) and basswood. and the amount of time and loving care that was devoted to each piece is reflected in the superb quality of the finished product. The elongated RICHMOND HILL * The two artists. Olga Nickle and Elena Blair, who are currently exhibiting at the Richmond Hill Library, certainly meet these criteria outlined by Cezanne. They both haveVa love of life and dedication to their craft that raises it to art in the broadest sense. Cezanne followed “A work of art which does not originate from emotion is not art. Emotion is the starting point. the beginning and the end. Craftsmanship and techniquv are in the middle." While the hills may be alive with the sound of music, the Church of St. Mary Immaculate, Dunlop and Yonge Sts.. will reverberate with the "Sounds of Christmas". Many of the works would make exâ€" cellent Christmas presents so I would recommend that you visit the show as soon as possible. It continues until the middle of January. The current show at the library gallery is successful because of the dedication and enthusiasm of the ar- tists‘ and all that is needed to make it an unqualified success is a good response from the public The pictures of the Bancroft area will be appreciated by all cottage owners, and will instill all amateur photographers with the urge to become more proficient. Elena and her son Mitchell have put on display a number of photographs that will appeal to anyone with a modicum of aesthetic appreciation. Elena Blair is a TV producer and director, (CFTO‘s Toronto To-Day Show and the Uncle Bobby Show).
