Hr, _ . 49.4w, “nu-... i- :s. w... ...-xv.» ROUGH NOTES CONTINUED. ( Concluded.) The dinner bell rings, and the Span- ish ox that was yesterday slaugh- tered, forms an agreeable repast.-â€"- The soup also are large. California potatoes look very inviting, and seem rapidly to disappear from the board. An ox of the California breed is being led to the slaughter; a large crowd follow, seemingly much eluted at the prospect of being spec- tators of the scene. Judging from their anxiety to witness the death “chives of the poor animal, one would gynaturallv conclude that the organ of destructiveness is very fairly develo- ped iiumaiiy. The mate interposes his authority, and drives them to the Iarboard side, as there is a probabiâ€" Iity of being capsized by such a weight on the starboard. Supper is in preparationâ€"a fresh application of the ‘ old plaster ’-vtea, biscuit, and salt junk. Searcer has the meal been dispatched when there is a si- multaneous movement in the direc- tion of the water-tank. One of the sailors is stationed there to draw and prevent the water from being carried away. About 350 gallons have been used for drink aloneto- day, besides all that has been used in cooking, washing vessel. &c. as well as that required at the bar with ice. A glass of ice-water or of any other kind of drink, costs Only 25 cents on this boat, and many are fools enough to spend $8 to $10 a day in this way. Their pockets, on landing. will be light, whether their hearts will be so or not. One fellow from N. Caro- lina spent, since leaving N York in this traffic, $700 ; he also lost a gold watch in Aspinwall on the night we stopped there. The colored ladies were too many for the Yankee; this same lad was he who acted the part of Abe Lincoln on board the North Star. His friends and money haVe absquatulated in concert. We have a barber on board, who is on board to accomodate customers with a clean ‘ barefaced shave.’ Price only 25 cents. We have a goodly number of American gentry on board, among which are Col. Madore Foote, and the governor Of the district of Co- lumbia. Cabin passengers and steer- age passengers seem determined to- night to emerge from the lower re- gions, and take possession of the more devoted. Of course this is a great annoyance to many of us, and we look upon it as an infringement of our rights to be thus cramped and crowded by those who have berths, and like the dog in the manger, will neither use them themselves nor al- low others to do so. Every foot of the hurricane deck is occupied to- night. Those on the watch have a difficult task in threatening their way from one end to the other, The of- ficers and crew are very patient and forbearing with the passengersâ€"â€" Now for a sleep. I could almost wish that fellow, who has attracted a large crowd on the opposite side to listen to his infernal bawliug and singing, had been born tongue-tied, and allowed to remain so. Tuunsuxr, May 15.â€"â€"All hands in motion bright and early. Took an ablutroe and a turn at the pump used in washing the decks. The exercise and morning air create a good appetite. 1 am quite ready to repair to the first table at 6.30. a.m., where we are plentifully supplied with Indian meal, mush and molasses (which is very good this morning) coffee, bisruit, and the usual relish of ‘sult horse.’ The, morning opens with a bright and smiling sun, with ovary prospect of another fine day. The hurricane deck is fairly cram- med wrth living freight. more crowded and densely packed than even was the szine‘man on an ex- cursion to Niagara. Hundreds of groups of three and four intent on a game of euchre ; 80.110 reading pa- pers and liOVcls 3 ladies knitting and sewing; others washing babies uriâ€" derclothing, while some few like my- self are noting the passing events.â€" A woman standing close by me this morning called the attention of her hasband to some sea birds that were flying around. ‘ Arralr, Micky, share an’ we must be near land, don’t you see the crows fiying.’â€"â€" Some flying fish are observable to- day. No land in sight ; our course is \V. N. W" , lat. at noon, 13 deg, 52 N., long. 93, 10 W. Distance sailed since noon, Saturday, 192 miles ; the breeze being scarcely perceptible, no sails are set. Dinner bell rings; a general movement in the direction of the tablesâ€"dqu and molasses, biscuit and ‘ salt horse.’â€"â€" Englishmen in little groups here and there, comment freely on'thc quality of the food. This seems to be their general theme. No sooner has din- ner been despatehed than complain~ ing commences ; indeed I saw some lose the meal altogether, so intent were they on following up their fa- vorite game. Some try to pass the time away by reading. This is not easily done; so much chatting on all sides, usually on a high key, espe- cially among the Dutchmen, that it is hard to fix the attention on any subject. lic. o»... . .. > ,. ~, .. ....y. * _ ... pork. Find it almost impossible to get to bed to-night. Females, whose berths are below in the steerage, have the heat, and so ipsist on sitting with us whether we will or no. This may sound strange, but it is never- theless true. The most obscene jests, iicentious language pass freely among the men in their having to endeavor to drive them to their berths, but all without effect. They sit and listen apparently unconcern- ed. Well, poor creatures I suppose they wish to breathe the cool night air, and have it fan their checks as much as we do. FRIDAY. May 16.-â€"Morning calm and bright, also very hot. We have, in some degree, become inured to heat, and do not feel it to be so op- pressrve as at first. Land in sight on the starboard ; always sailed with delight. A neatly rigged brig in full sail is to be seen off the larboard.â€" Few vessels have been seen in the Pacific since we entered on our course. The welcome sound of the breakfast bell is heard and responded to with evident pleasure ; a general stampede from all parts of the ship to the tables. Glad to see the grumbling abbut victuals gradually subsiding.’ The steam is getting up in cigars and pipes, which emit the odour of the Indian weed far and wide over the sea. Another ex is taken aft to the wheelâ€"â€"a real Pa- nama reindeer, nothing but skin and bone. Poor fellow it is well he should be killed, in order to save him from starvation. The afternoon passes in the usual wayâ€"-some sleep- ing, others wide awake ; one trying to gain the attention of a very cre- dulous individual, and is expatiating largely on his geographical know- ledge ; declares Lough Meagh is the largest lake in Europe. . Iasked him why he did not say in the world, not even excepting Superior, Huron,&c. This boat cannot go close to the wharf at Acapules, the water being too shallow, and as I understand, the natives are in the habit of charging exorbitantly for ferriage. I have reâ€" solved not to permit them to practice their extortion on me. I shall,thcre- fore, leave. it- with the purscr of the boat_ who takes charge ofletters and sends them on shore to the Ameri- can Consul to be posted, for which reason I will have to close ere we reach the shore, and reserve my description of Acapules tillI write again from San Francisco. It is now half-past 9 a.m., and we expect to be on shore about 11-â€"malting the passage from Panama to Ace- pules in 6 days, 18 hours. I sup- pose we will reach San Francisco in 9 days more.
