“ ROUGH NOTES OF A VOY- AGE FROM NEW YORK TO SAN FRANCISCO.” â€"_ Continued from our last. SUNDAY, May 6tliâ€"Roused as usual about 4 o’cloék ; just the time I wanted to sleep-«deck being wash- ed off; breakfast is now readyâ€"cob fee and biscuit, potatoes and salt junkâ€"great difficulty in elbowing one’s way even to the third table ; a general turn out on deck of all the steeragc passengers - some have got on their Sunday dress, but man others, :among the rest, have 110% been able to get to our trunks for any change. So many men with long boards I have scarcely ever seen; in fact there is not room in any part of the steerage to shave. The sun is almost vertical and the heat would be very great were it not for a very pleasant refreshing breeze. Dinner is now ready; third table is being served; I must try and crowd forward if I would secure some of the rice and water soup that all seem so anxious to get. It seems unpleasant to have to force one’s way to table after having paid so well for it, and yet it must be done if a person would get anything at all. We were entertained this forenoon with a choice selection of secular airs, consisting of waltzes, polkas, &c., by a harper and violon- ist, who are likely on their way to the western shores of this continent with a View to make their “piles” by musicâ€"a very pleasant Way of making money. The passengers seemed to appreciate the amuse- ment by contributing freely when the hat was passed around; I did not think it altogether appropriate on the Sabbath and therefore did not patronise the hat. There was no dancing owing probably more to a want of room, than to a want of in- clination on the part of manyâ€"we have no clergy on boardâ€"-have no re- ligious service t0-day-â€"-my thoughts carry me back to the snug little chapel (Bethesda) Where the congre- gation is assembling about this time, although] am rapidly being borne away south on the Atlanticâ€"sup- per is going on just nowâ€"I have managed to get to the second table, and there yet remain to be served -â€"the passengers are outrageous at the fare and treatmentâ€"this morn- ing a number went to the captain to remonstrate, but without successâ€"â€" It is quite impossible for four cooks and half a dozen waiters to serve some six hundred people, with anything like comfort and quickness --in fact, many ofthe passengers do not deserve any better usage, nor even as good as they are getting. There is quite a number of Califor- nir miners aboard who think as they have travelled a little more than sonic others, that they have a right to bully and swear and do just as they please. For my own part I can get along very Well with the board; I brought a. small stock of my ownâ€"soda biscuits and other things which require no cookingâ€"â€" so when I don’t like what is going, I can take my own, and this I would advise every intending steerage passenger to do. I have not been able to find my trunk as yet among the multitudinous pile of boxes and trunks that are stowed away under canvass on the burri- cane deck, butl expect they will shortly begin to weigh them, and then. no doubt, I will find it. I felt rather lonesome that I could notget my music books to-dayâ€"nor even a clean collarâ€"all was in the trunk. The shades of evening are setting down, so I must prepare for another night’s rest on the soft side of a plank. MONDAY, May 5th.-â€"-Up at the usual hour; spent the night as comfortably as might be expected under 'the circumstances; was awakened about midnight by a neisy altercation between a Dutch passenger and a sailor, who, on go- ing his rounds as watch, chanced to step on the Dutchman, who had taken up his night’s lodgings by the galley doorâ€"the Dutchman aver- ring most positively that he (the sailor)"; had no business there; the sailor retaliating in no very compli- mentary terms to the poor son of Hesse Darmstadt. The usual rou- tine of washing, mopping and swab- bing having been gone through, breakfast is placed on the tableâ€" Indian meal, mush and molasses-â€" tastcs rather musty; the usual de- sert of coffee, hard biscuit and salt pork accompanying ; passengers be- coming extremely voracious. The grace is usually a shower of oaths from one end of the table to the otherâ€"Young America can carry off the palm at swearing, card playing. novel reading; sacred and secular music fill up the intervals from meal to meal. Dinner is commencedâ€" a general rush to the tablesâ€"push- ing, shtwing, and elbowing aâ€"la-modc. Germans clainorous; some calling for soup, othersfor swill, thinking it undeserving of the appellation of soup. I would rather wait than crowd after this manner, even sup- posing the soup has to be dilutesI for the last tables. One Dutchman re- marks very jocularly, that granting every individual has to eat a peek of dirt before he dies, the passen- gers on this boat will have finished, their quantum by the time they 7 1 reach San Francisco. Whether they will feel ready to die by that .time is a questionl cannot solve. Through some difficulty I have been able to get to the fourth tableâ€" soup, biscuit, and salt junkâ€"day pretty hobâ€"waiters mostly of the American type in a great flurry and perspiring very freely. Now then I have got through, and wish to get away to a more airy place as soon as possrble. Nothing new but smokingâ€"some three or four hun‘ dred pipes and cigars in full blow. Hark! I think I hear music; so it is -â€"â€"the harp and violin in operation, and two Irishmen tripping the 'light fantastic toe ’ to the tune of Patrick’s Day. The merry laugh rings as one after another enters the list, something in the style of the ‘cut- ting out jig.’ Vocal music now takes the place of the instrumental, For Eight Dollars. DR. . J.
