Putting the candle out. ‘ I know well enough,” said a youngster, “where fresh fish comes from, but where these salt ones are catched, I’ll be hanged if I can tell.’ A minister at a camp meeting, said: ‘Ifthc lady with the blue hat, red hair, and cross eye, don’t stop talking she will be pomted out to the congregation.’ Put two persons in the same bedroom, one of whom has the toothache, and the . other is in love, and the person who has the, toothache will go to sleep first. Mrs. Partington, in illustration of the proverb, that ‘ a soft answer turueth away wrath,’ says that ‘it is better to speak paragorical of a person, than to be all the tithe flinging cpitaphs at him, for no good comes to nobody that never speaks good of no one.’ A MATTER or BUSINESS.â€"â€"A parson going to church on horseâ€"hack, and inedi- toting deeply by the way, forgot the right direction of his horse. In an article already forwarded, 1 have referred to a large profit in one instance, realized from the maâ€" nufacture of strawberry wine.»â€" Just MI was leaving the city l took from the Post Office a letter from the party referred to, from which I make the following extracts, pro- mismg that I am assured by men of integrity that those statements can be relied on as correct :â€"‘ In refer- ence to the manufacture of wine from the strawberry, I will say that I have realized full six hundred dol- lars not profit from not over one half acre the past season (the letter is dated Feb. 20th, 1862,)â€"â€"inalting certainly double the amount of money that could be realized in our markets from the fruit. The article (of wine) you tested in Chicago, was not a fair specimen, as it was drawn from the lccs too soon. My success in the sale of the article has been beyond my most sanguine expectaâ€" tions. 1 have assurance that I can sell all tbatI can make, by parties who have been introducing it in Cincinuatti and Dayton, Ohio, and Indianopolis, Indiana. In short, it is universally admired, especially by the ladies. I am so confident of its success that I intend tricking seventy- fivc or one hundred barrels of it next season. I have no trouble in selling it at $250 per gulloii.‘ I sold, a few days since, to one party, the second barrel at the above 63.5” ure. I have about forty acres in strawberries in Illinoisâ€"«about half of them at Aurora, fortyâ€"three miles from Chicago, whercl intend re- movingr the lst of April, and turn my Whole attention to fruit. and wine-making. I have eighteen acres in Southern Illinois for early market, and expect the coming season to plant eighteen acres more â€"â€"making nearly sixty acres 1 have in small fruit and peaches. My peach orchard is in ‘Egypt.’ in South Illinois. It is now just cor-n- ing into bearing,r and ofthc best va- rieties now cultivated in United Sititcs.’ Tull ig‘ of the wine, be says-«‘1 am satisfied with one thing. If you want a fine fabric, you must employ a fine inntcrial.â€"â€"â€" It is conceded by all, that the straw- orry is the finest of all the small fruits; then why may not the wine excel the Catawba, if made riglit't’ Some will dissent from the pro- mises, and therefore from the con- clusfon; but it is a fact of some significance that many of our best chstcrn fruitists have expressed great faith in tho dltiinutc and sucâ€" cessful use of the strawberry for l l .,. 8.1 "Iisecf said a ncighour, in passing‘ that you have at last obtained your objectâ€"~you are a settled minisicr.’ ‘Do help me out,’ begged the person. wine manufactuic. The success above detailed must be credited to Mr. E. Sims, of Boone county, Inâ€" “I will,’ said the other, ifyou’ll promis- no there to denounce our church and echo gregegation as you did last Sunday, merely because we diller from you.’ ‘I’ooh' pooli‘.‘1 cried the parson, ‘that ineansjust nothing at all~~it is only a mat- ter of business, we must say someting to please the people. A FAIR RRTORT.â€"«At the Assizc at Nazis, many years back, while Mr. I‘ursons was {uldrcssing the court, an ass in the street happened to bray so loudly as to inâ€" terrupt the learned gentleman : whereupon the learned Judge Lord Nerbury said ‘Oiic at a time, gentlemenâ€"one at a time, if you please.’ This sally caused much mcrriinent in th Coin't but did not in the least discompose Mr. I‘arsoiiS, who pursued the tenor of his discourse as if nothing of the kind had hap- pened. He was not, however inscnsible to the mcrir. of a joke, nor willing to let. it go uoi‘cwnrdcd, and an opportunity was soon afforded ofgiving :1 ‘Roland for on Oli- ver.’ When his lordship was addressing the jury, the same assâ€"~wlzich seemed fond of the Coni"tâ€"~-br.iycd again, and" deeper and deeper still.’ But at this moment the learned Judge was so taken up with the business in pro gross that be quite forgot his ownjoke, and start-led at the sound of Neddy’s swect. voice, he hastily said .‘ ‘ \Vhat’s thatâ€"what noise is that? ‘It’s only the echo of the Coral, my Lord,’ said Mr. Parsons gravely. SALT F05: 'riir: ’I‘iiiiOATrâ€"In these days, when diseases of the throat are so universally prevalent. and :0 many cases fatal, we feel it our duty to say a word in bebalfof a most effectual preventative, if not a positive cure, of sore throat. For many years past, indeed we may say during the whole of a life of over forty years, we have been subject to a sore throat, and more particularly to a dry hacking cough. which was not only distressing to ourselves, but to our friends and those with whom we were brought into business contact. Last fall we were induced to try what virtue there was in common salt. \Vc commenced by using'it three times a day. Morning, noon and night. We dissolved at large taliilcspoonful of pure salt in about half a small tumbler full of cold water. With this we garglc the throat most theâ€" roughly just before meal time.â€" Thc result has been that during the entire wintcr we were not only free from the usual coughs and colds to which, as far it our memory ex- tends, we have alwdys been subject, but. the dry hacking cough has en- tirely disappeared- We attribute thcsc satisfactory results solely to the use of salt gurglc, and do most cordially recommend a trial of it, to those who are suiject to di uses of so the throat. Many persons who have never tried the salt gargle, liavc the in'iprcssiou that it is un- pleasant. Such is not the case.â€" On the contrary, it is pleasant, and after a few day’s use no person who loves a nice clean mouth. and a first- rate sharpener of the appetite, will abandon it.-~It‘m'mer and Chi-(loner.
