lento]. ...â€".4. SONG OF THE DECANTER. There was an old decan- ter; andiits mouth was gaping wide ; the rosy wine had ebbed-away and left its crys- tal side: and the wind went hummingâ€"- Humming, up and! down the sides it flew, and through the reed-like hollow neck the wildest notes it. blew. I placed‘itiin the" window, where the blast was» blowing free, and fancied that its- pale mouth sang the queerest strains to me. ‘ They tell meâ€"puny conquerors! Plague has slain his ten.and War his hundred thousand ofthe verybest of men; but 1’ ’twas thus the Bottle spake, ‘but 1 have conquered more than all your famous conquerors, so feared and famed of yore. Then come,ye youths-and maidens all, come drink from outmy cup,tbe bev‘rage that dulls the brain 6L burns the spirits up; that puts to shame your couq’rors 51. slay their scores below ; for this has delug’d mil lions with the lava tide ofwoc Tho’ in the path of battle darkest waves ofblood may roll; yet while 1 kill ed the body,1have dam'd the ve ry soul The ch‘olera, the plague sword, such ruin never wro't as 1,111 mirth or malce,on the innocent have bro’ght. And stillI breathe upon them. do they shrink before mybreath and year by year my thousands tread the dismal road of Death.’ 1 Distributions, \. 11ean Carey, a lyrist and 5211111515,] wrote both the words and music of ‘ God save the Queen" yet, notwithstanding the popularity of the anthem, poor Carey suf- fered so much from poverty and destitution that he hanged himself. “ They found him cold, with only skin on his bones, and a half-penny in his p0cket. Think of this when next you hear ‘God save the Queen.’ ” Success tn the world.â€"-There is a “world of wisdom’ in the following quo- -tation, brief as it is:-â€"‘ Every schoolboy knows that a kite would not fly unless it had a string tying it down. It is just so in life. The man who is tied down by a half a dozen blooming responsibilities and their mother will make a higher and strong- er flight than the bachelor who, having nothing to keep him steady, is always floundering in the mud. If you want to ascend in the world t‘ic yourself to some- body! Seand'al.â€"1~Iow comes it that the evil which men say spreads so widely and lasts so long, whilst our good, kind words don’t seem somehow to take root and bear blos- som? Is it that in the stony hearts of mankind these pretty flowers can’t find a place to grow? Certaia it is that scandal is good. bnisk talk, whereas praise of one’s neighbor is by no means lively hearing. An acquaintance grilled, scored, devilled, and served with mustard and‘ cayenne perv per, excites the appetite; whcareas a slice of cold friend with current jelly is but a sickly, unrelishicg meat. Sheridan and the bootsâ€"He had al- ways a taste for the heart of puding, and he began early in life-soon after leaving .Harrow. He was spending a few days at Bristol, and wanted a pair of new boots, but could not afford to pay for them. Shortly before he left, he called on two bootmakers, and ordered of each a pair, promising payment on delivery. He fixed the morning ofhis departure for the trades- man to send in their goods. When the first arrived, he tried the boots, and com- plained that for the right foot pinched a little, and ordered Crispm to take it back and stretch it, and bring it again at nine the hex-t morning. The second arriVed soonvaften, and this time it was the boot for- the left“ foot which pinched. Same complaint; same order green; each had taken away only the pinching boot, and left the other behind. The some afternoon ' Sheridan left in his new boots for town; and when the two shoemakers called at nine next day, each with a boot to his hand, we can» imagine their disgust at finding bow nicely they had been duped.» AMERICAN- LADIES: AND GENTLEMRN. --The 1adies,.I. observe, are singularly pale and flaccid in complexionâ€"partly the re- sult of this exhausting and blood-draining heat, partly the result of the want of exer- cise and unwolesome dickâ€"but are often ofan exqusite, thought rather fragile beauty the- tropical hothouse flower, rather than of teltc‘hard'y English rosebud. I cannot, in justice, say that they are well drssed, for they seem to me always to have too much or too little on. There is a good deal of poofuse ill adapth French finerv, and a good deal of the better sort of English mechanic’s wife dowdiness. They all wear the new bonnet arched over the forehead, with room enough for a large nosegay be- tween the head and the arch. They are all, too, I observe, rather strong-minded in manner, and seem trying to express their stern. opinion that a man is a weed of ore- ation. They receive all politeness, I re- mark, as a right wrung from manâ€"~not as a homage voluntarily yielded. The men are feverishly energetic and nervously ac- uteâ€"nearly all nerve, in fact, and very little niuScle. (You scarcer ever see an old man in America out-door life, yet a'l the young look old.) They all wear that horrid mechanic-looking best black suite, exaggerated gold chains, and wrinkly black satin ‘vcst.’â€"â€"â€"All the Yror Round. business Directory. GE 0. M c P H.
