Underdog Trailblazers need win over the Irish today to win Halton girls' hockey title The Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers continued their unlikely run to the Halton high school girls' hockey championship, upsetting the previously unbeaten Georgetown Rebels in Tuesday's semifinal. Georgetown seemed bound for the finals. The Rebels finished first in the regular season with a 12-0-2 record while Iroquois Ridge was sixth with a 5-7-2 mark. Georgetown came into the semis having allowed just four goals in its past eight games. But the Trailblazers matched that in a 4-1 win, led by Gillian Day, who scored twice. Zoe O'Neill and Amanda Molyneaux also scored for Iroquois Ridge. Ridge began its playoff run by knocking off third-place Abbey Park. The Eagles built a 3-0 lead in the opening period but the Trailblazers stormed back with goals by Jaime Brioux, Gennie Cloutier, Molyneaux and Day to take the lead. Abbey Park tied the game 4-4 but Shannon Fenwick scored with a minute to play to give Ridge a 5-4 win. Iroquois Ridge's opponent in Friday's (today's) Halton final, set for 10:30 a.m. at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Irish had its own close call in the semifinal, edging the Christ the King Jaguars 2-1 in double overtime. The Jaguars controlled the play but Irish goalie Katarina Smith held off the CTK attack until Alyssa Biase scored for the Notre Dame in the second overtime. Alexa Fraser had Notre Dame's other goal. Notre Dame finished second during the regular season with a 10-1-3 record. The Irish and Iroquois Ridge tied 4-4 when they met in early January. After losing 2-1 to Aurora's Storm Vortex in pool play in the girls' division of the 17U Grand Prix volleyball tournament at the Haber Centre on the weekend, the Hurricanes stormed back to win the championship. LVC Intensity ousted Vortex in the semifinals, but had to settle for silver when the Hurricanes defeated the London-based team 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-14) in the final. The tournament features the top teams in the province and is a scouting location for the Ontario Volleyball Association's new identification program for potential invitees to provincial team tryouts in May. The event was held earlier this month at the Nottawasaga Resort in Alliston. The Rangers opened the tournament with a 6-1 win over Stoney Creek, Evan Malloy scoring two goals, then dumped North Toronto Green 8-2. In Game 3, featuring a pair of 2-0 teams, Oakville defeated host Bradford 4-1, getting a hat trick from Adam Broglio.
