Town unveils local contribution to Canada 150 Mosaic Mural Project by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Friday, February 19, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Members of Oakville's arts community came together at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) Tuesday to unveil the town's contribution to the Canada 150 Mosaic Mural Project. The national endeavor commemorates Canada's 150th anniversary by bringing together 150 communities and thousands of participants to create community murals that visually reflect the history and culture of Canada. Each mural is made up of 750 painted tiles. For Oakville, some of these tiles were sent to local arts organizations -- such as Oakville Arts Council and Artworks Oakville -- ahead of time for painting, while many others were made available for community members to paint at QEPCCC over the Family Day long weekend. Lewis Lavoie, designer for the Mosaic Mural Project, said the turnout for Oakville was impressive with everyone from children as young as age three to Oakville MP John Oliver coming out to paint a tile. "Each tile was painted by someone in the community to represent something dear in their heart, something about themselves or something about Oakville," said Lavoie. "Some of my favorites were done by little kids who were painting their family members. I had people who were passionate about their clubs, so they painted their clubs in there. There are just some great pieces of artwork there that just stand out." A variety of images with different meanings The participants painted a wide variety of pictures on their tiles from snowflakes and flowers to local landscapes and wildlife, as well as a peace sign. Oakville resident and local artist Virender Paul Madan, who attended the unveiling, said the tile he painted represents his family's story. It features a deep saffron, white and green rainbow -- representing him and his wife coming to Canada and bringing their culture with them -- three evergreen trees, representing their three children, and a 2003 penny representing the birth of their grandchild. All of these tiles were ultimately used to assemble the greater eight-by-12-foot mural unveiled Tuesday. The greater picture, made from the expert arrangement of the individual tiles, includes an image of a great oak tree and the lighthouse from Oakville harbor.
