M ilto n a n d D istrict REAL ESTATE BOARD Canadians have been giving money and aid to the U.S. following the Sept. 11 ter rorist attacks on New York City and Washington. But the real question is what this country can do to aid the Americans in their commitment to bring international terror ism to its knees. After all, what could Prime Minister Jean Chretien Unless Canada m akes . offer the president on Monday? The answer is pre changes to its cious little. Our military has been virtually emasculat im m igration and ed by a series of Conservative and Liberal govern border policies, look ments which means the best we. could provide would be a few select units and some aircraft. for economic What we can do is change our porous immigration consequences from policy that is long on loopholes and short on common the U.S. sense and research. Canadian passports can apparent ly be easily forged by any organized group. The situa tion is so farcical that one person who reportedly entered the country illegally not once, but twice, wasn't even detained and was only detected when he tried to enter the U.S. And it's cases like this one that has the most dire implications for Canada as both a nation and a friend and business partner of the U.S. Consider this: Toyota has already said it would likely not expand its Canadian facil ities in light of the terrorist attack because of the resulting long waits for auto parts car ried by truckers at the border crossings at Windsor and Sarnia. The same problem is facing Ford, which relies heavily on parts trade with the U.S. and its just-in-time manufacturing process. The company's Oakville truck plant here does not have a long term commitment for vehicle production and the more vigilant border posture could spell the death-knell for that plant and by association, the econo my of Ontario. So what does all of this mean? How about added pressure from the U.S. to up our military spending, improve our immigration and customs service and improve our spy systems. Unless some of these measures are taken, especially expanding our border person nel, look for a dramatic impact on our economy as our major trading partner becomes increasingly protectionist as a response to the terrorist threat. I wrote this piece for my W riters Craft class the day that A m erica was attacked by terrorists. It was bound to happen. The destruction o f the World Trade Towers and the attem pted depletion o f the Pentagon was so shocking because as a society we did not think that it could get any worse. A fter the O klahom a City bom bing and the shoot ings at Colum bine, it was hard to believe that an act even more devastating could occur - yet it did. This incident is by far the m ost atrocious and disturbing occurrence that I have ever seen in my short eighteen years on this planet. The scenes o f the packed hospitals with doctors, param edics and nurses scur rying around, trying to save as m any lives as possi ble. This footage is absolutely blood-curdling. Suicide attacks doomed to backfire Health professionals need adequate funding Annie Wolfraim Hope tourney raised $49,000 On behalf of chair, Shirley Sveda and all of the organiz ers of the `2001 Tournament of Hope', held Sept. 13 at the Oakville Executive G olf Course, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the many people who came out to support this very special event. We are delighted to say that over $49,000 was raised. Proceeds will be directed to the Wellspring Centre and the Burlington Cancer Support Services. We would also like to say that serious consideration was given to cancelling this tournament in view o f the tragic events that unfolded in the U.S. on Sept. 11. However, on further reflection, it was determined that by going ahead we were making a statement about maintaining `hope' at such a dark time in the world's history. The diagnosis o f cancer is one o f those personal dark moments endured by thousands of Canadians each year. We are extremely grateful to all of the businesses and individu als who showed that they too have `hope'. Special thanks goes to our many sponsors who donated money, services and gifts. W ithout them we would have been unable to raise such a significant amount of money in a single day. The funds raised will provide help to the many patients and families struggling with this dreaded disease. Everyone who attended are to be commended on their caring spirit and their willingness to lend their support to our local community.
