KIDS DAY: Patient and doctor discuss schizophrenia at seminar Understanding Schiz ophrenia, a free seminar from the perspective of both a patient and a psychiatrist, will be held on Monday, Oct. 1. Organized by Halton Healthcare Services (Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital site) Health Promotion and Mental Health Programs, Halton Region Health Department, and the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, the seminar will begin at 7 p.m. at the Halton Administration Building Auditorium, 1151 Bronte Rd., just north of the QEW. Dr. Wilson Lit, psychia trist director, Community Division, Homewood Health Centre and assistant clinical professor at McMaster University, will provide a comprehensive overview of schizophrenia and answer questions. Ian Chovil, consumer consultant, Community Division, Homewood Health Centre, will discuss schizo phrenia from the perspective of a patient. Schizophrenia is an extremely complex mental disorder believed to be caused by a biochemical imbalance in the brain. It is characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disturbances in thinking and communication, and with drawal from social activity. Schizophrenia is a serious but treatable disorder, which affects a person's ability to know what is reality and what is not. The disorder may devel op so gradually that it is undetectable in the person for a long time, or it may have a very sudden onset with rapid development. It most commonly strikes between the ages of 16 and 30. In Canada, one in every 100 persons is diagnosed with this disorder.
