Region activates emergency plan (Continued from page 1) Guaranteed results · Personalized service · Safe, easy & effective Emergency Control Group (ECG) set up an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at Halton regional headquarters where municipal, police, fire and ambulance officials continued meet ings last night. Also included were officials from health, social services and public works. No requests for emergency services had come from the U.S., or elsewhere in the GTA, said Halton Region CAO and ECG head Brent Marshall, but things were busy here at home. Early last evening 1,000 passengers from four European flights were stranded at Hamilton airport -- and only 120 of Halton's 1,600 hotel rooms were still vacant. Halton's Business Development staff were working on finding hotel accom m odation and emergency housing. U.S. air traffic was re-routed to Canada all day while all other airport activity was closed down -- across North America -- and North American air space went quiet with the exception of Department of Defence aircraft. Marshall said the ECG initiated conference calls with other GTA com m unities from N iagara Region to Toronto, co-ordinating accommoda tion relief. Local police, fire and ambulance crews were on standby ready to pro vide whatever relief or resources were needed. One am bulance was dispatched early in the day to provide back-up at Pearson International Airport. Another ambulance, as well as fire crews, were at Burlington Air Park, located on Bell School Line, which was on stand-by in case the Hamilton airport became overloaded. Marshall said there was no need to reassign any police to any other juris diction. It's all part of Halton's Emergency Plan that was conceived in the 1980s, but hasn't yet been tested to this extent. "The ECG discussed the potential impact the situation in the United States may have on our emergency resources. We are essentially waiting for any directions for further action from Emergency Measures Ontario w hich co-ordinates emergency efforts," said Marshall. It was early to know what help might be required but Harris' statement urged those who could, to give blood. Others with medical or other special expertise may be called upon, said Harris' statement which indicated that announcements about where, when and how people can help will be made when the information becomes avail able. "Our deepest sympathies are with the people of the United States on this very tragic day, and all of their friends and family throughout the world. It is important that the residents of Halton know that we will, of course, assist in w hatever way we can as events unfold," said Halton Regional chair Joyce Savoline. Savoline was in touch with the four area municipal mayors throughout yes terday. Yet as airports closed and Toronto evacuated, Halton schools remained open, yesterday. Some parents took , their children home early, admitted Halton District School Board spokesperson Mamie Denton. Secondary students, Denton said, were "very well aware" of what was transpiring, and those distraught with the tragic events, called home for per mission to leave early. For others, the school day proceed ed as usual and everyone was "safe and sound," said Denton. The public school board was pre pared with its Tragic Events Response Team (TERT) to deal with those who may have been directly affected by the tragedy, said Denton, acknowledging the board has some 45,000 student enrolled. Halton Catholic District School Board spokesperson Chris Jewell said, "Our schools are open and operational, but we have advised our principals to provide support to staff and students." "We're also offering prayers in sup port of those who have been directly affected by these very tragic incidences in a number of U.S. sites and cities," said Jewell.
