Police ready enforcement Warning issued about illicit use of cough medicine blitz in local school zones Halton police are preparing to do an enforcement blitz of school bus and school zone safety in Oakville over the next fortnight. On Monday (Feb. 8), police will launch Project GET BACK, a traffic safety initiative that targets drivers who fail to stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing and its stop arm is out. Officers will be out patrolling school zones in Oakville for eight consecutive days. "This Halton Regional Police Service is committed to combating this type of behaviour and keep our roads and children safe," stated a press release issued by police to notify the public of the upcoming blitz. Violators face fines ranging between $400-$2,000 and six demerit points for a first offence. Halton police are warning parents and youths about the illicit use of cough medicine containing dextromethorphan. The Drugs, Guns and Gangs Unit has reported receiving several calls from local pharmacists and parents regarding this recent trend. Dextromethorphan is the active ingredient in several over-the-counter cough remedies. The illicit use of dextromethorphan can cause a high or a so called `robotrip.' Large doses or overdoses can lead to symptoms that could include: breathing problems -- slow and laboured breathing, shallow breathing, no breathing; bluish fingernails and lips; blurred vision; coma; convulsions (seizures); drowsiness; dizziness; hallucinations; and, vomiting. Dextromethorphan is not listed in the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and is therefore an over-thecounter medicine. Several pharmacies in Halton have noticed youths coming in to buy cough medicines containing dextromethorphan. 7 | Friday, February 5, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Some pharmacists have placed the products behind the counter. Although dextromethorphan is not a controlled substance, its recreational use and possibility of overdose could lead to criminal charges, such as administering a noxious substance or criminal negligence. Halton police encourage parents to discuss the dangers of dextromethorphan and urge pharmacies to place all cough medicines containing dextromethorphan behind the counter.
