`The brain was designed to be extremely creative': Hewis Clarification continued from p.18 (QEPCCC), 2302 Bridge Rd., with an official opening Sunday (Feb. 7) from 3-6 p.m. in the Main Gallery. The works, available to the public until Feb. 21, include collages, prints, paintings and sculptures. "Offering new means of self-expression, these artworks provide original points of entry into the lived experiences of their creators," according to program organizers. Hewis said art could remain beneficial to someone living with Alzheimer's even long after they've been diagnosed. "The brain was designed to be extremely creative," she told the Oakville Beaver in a previous interview. "The creative hub of the brain is one of the very last parts that is affected by this disease, which is the reason people can continue to be creative long into the onset of (it)." She went on to say people living with the Alzheimer's often forget words and have challenges expressing themselves verbally, but "the amazing thing... is that art bypasses the need for words." "One connects with the art on a very emotional level.... The actual act of doing the art has a very meditative and relaxing quality, and offers the person with Alzheimer's a space to create and express in a very different way than society often dictates," said Hewis. Oakville Galleries is also hosting a roundtable discussion Feb. 17 for anyone wishing to learn more about Points of Entry and the new exhibit. Roundtable Conversation: Creative Futures takes place at the QEPCCC's Main Gallery from 7-8:30 p.m. It will feature Hewis and Danielle Arbour, public education co-ordinator for the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton, and be moderated by Underhill. The roundtable will offer an open forum to discuss living with dementia and the benefits of arts engagement for seniors of all ages, abilities and diagnoses. Anyone interested in participating in the Points of Entry program can also call 905-844-4402 or email education@oakvillegalleries.com. 19 | Friday, February 5, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com In clarification of a story, Young authors get chance to be published in local competition, in the Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016 edition of the Oakville Beaver, the deadline for entries was extended after the story went to press.
