"There are a lot in the U.S., but there aren't many in Canada who can train students to a high level, so that they can dance professionally as a career," she said. Paterson is a graduate of Canada's National Ballet School and the fulltime Professional Training Program in 1978. She took up the mantle of artistic director at OSCB after her mother's retirement about 20 years ago. "My vision has always been to provide a training facility that offers dancers in Halton, Hamilton and Mississauga performance experience that they can take and apply when they enter the dance world," Paterson said. "Ballet is a demanding art form, requiring hard work, rigorous training, and a demanding focus and determination." Paterson noted, while there are many male students at the OSCB, she would love to see more boys in ballet. "The strength training and discipline required is absolutely fantastic for them. I'd like to see a change, a better education to draw the boys into ballet," she said, adding she hopes Oakville Ballet will provide the stage to do just that.
