"Three New Names on Walk of Fame"

BY MICHELLE RUBY EXPOSITOR STAFF Brantford Three of Brantford's most prominent citizens were officially inducted into the second installment of the city's Walk of Fame Friday.

Honoured were local broadcaster Arnold Anderson, turn-of-the-century poet Pauline Johnson and late entrepreneur Samuel W. Stedman at an induction ceremony at the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts.

The evening included tributes and video presentations detailing the remarkable lives of the Walk of Fame inductees. Replica plaques etched with each inductees' likeness will be permanently fixed in bronze and added to the display in the city's downtown next to the Market Square.

Mayor Chris Friel called the Walk of Fame a tribute to "some truly remarkable people from the Brantford and area community that changed not only Canada but the world."

The poems of Pauline Johnson, born on Six Nations in 1861, are known world-wide. She was recognized for her contributions to arts and education.

The daughter of an Iroquois chief, Johnson shared her gift for storytelling on tours of small towns and cities in the late 1800s.

Six Nations resident Mona Staats read two of Johnson's poems, including one of her best known, The Song My Paddle Sings. The beauty of the local landscape inspired much of Johnson's work. Chiefswood, her family home near Ohsweken, has been restored and is open to the public.

"If we close our eyes, we can imagine Pauline as she was 150 years ago, skimming over the Grand River in her canoe," Six Nations elected Chief Councillor Wellington Staats said.

Known to his Brantford friends as Mr. Sam, Samuel Stedman was honoured for his contributions to business and commerce.

Born in 1881, Stedman first developed his entrepreneurial skills as a carrier boy for The Expositor.

An outstanding businessman, Stedman's Brantford book store quickly
