(905) 850-6406 Dr. Ronald Bell 0DA honours local dentist Dr. Ronald J. Bell of Oakville has recently received the Ontario Dental Association's (ODA) highest award of Honorary Membership. This aw ard is rarely given and requires a lifetime o f service o f 30 or more years to be considered. The ODA's Honorary M embership Award recognizes outstanding contribu tions to the art and science of dentistry on either a provincial or national level. Aside from Dr. B ell's busy dental practice, volunteering in the community is important to him. In the past, he has sat on the Board of Directors o f the Oakville G olf Club and was the chairm an of Junior Development there for a term o f five years. He served as president in 1994. In the early 1970s, Dr. Bell was inte gral in the formation o f Dental Services at O akville T rafalgar M em orial Hospital. There, he continues to volun teer for the on-call emergency dental services, w hich have proven to be essential to the community o f Oakville. Dr. Bell also chairs the Complaints Committee for this service. Dr. Bell graduated with his DDS degree in 1971 and interned at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children for a year. Since then he has had a private dental practice in Oakville. From the begin ning o f his career as a dentist, he has continued to be a member of the ODA and its Halton-Peel Dental Association. During the 1970s, Dr. Bell was active with the Oakville Dental Society and later served the Halton-Peel Dental Association in the entire hierarchy of com ponent society responsibilities cul minating as president o f the Halton-Peel association in 1979. His peers there rec ognized his contributions to organized dentistry with numerous awards such as the Halton-Peel Award o f Distinction, which was awarded to him in 1994. Dr. Bell's value to the ODA became increasingly apparent and, by 1980, he was a member o f the Executive Council and, in 1985, served as President o f the ODA. For a 10-year period, every poli cy the ODA developed had some input from Dr. Bell. All dentists - and their patients - in the province are the benefi ciaries o f his involvement in organized dentistry. In 1988, the ODA recognized Dr. B ell's contribution w ith the Bam abus Day Award, w hich is the ODA's second highest mark of distinc tion. The Ontario Dental Association is the voluntary professional organization, which supports more than 6,000 mem ber dentists in the provision of exem plary oral health services and promotes the attainment of optimal health for the 2001.
