Wednesday August 15, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 COMMENT Our lifestyle is killing us "Kids who sit around all day are sit ting ducks for heart disease," says Dr. Bill Mackie, a former Olympic gym nast and western Canada chairman of the health promotion council of the B.C. Medical Association. H believes the short-sightedness o f the education system is fuelling the epidemic of inactivity and obesity in Canada. Well, that may be true. Getting rid of --------------------------- gym o f cut ting it in shreds at least hasn't done a lot for the overall health of kids. Then again, neither has stuffing them into cars and driving them to the mall, either. So, who's to blame? We all are. Like anything else, the disturbing trend towards fatter, not fit ter kids, can't be reduced to one prob lem. It's not videos, rock music, or pierced navels that's led to fatter kids. It's us. We like things to be convenient. We drive everywhere, sit in front of com puters and grab whatever we can at lunch. We drop them off on our way to work, and tell them not to watch too much television when we go out. And when we learn the troubling statistics about activity, we plunk them into organized sports and toss them a pizza slice (don't forget he dipping sauce!) in the back seat on the way to practice. Little wonder the arteries of kids are getting packed full of junk that'll kill them later. But let's (please) not drone on about the problem. It's sort of like the Ontario government tossing another survey about healthcare our way and forking out over $1 million to do what anyone with half a brain can tell them; we know the problem, let's fix it. Our kids our getting fat and inac tive. They are, as my brother-in-law Doug once said, a catastrophic health care disaster just waiting to happen. We drive too much, eat too much fast food and don't get enough exer cise. In the city, it's a lot easier. Public transit is a way o f life but in suburban communities like this one, the car rules. And when your kids begin whin ing about being forced to walk when -- absolutely everyone else drives -- it's made doubly difficult. It's time to change. Time to rage against suburban living and get out of our cars, pass on fast food, and get moving. We know the importance of reading to our kids from an early age; it's vital to their learning. So, too, is early activity. Getting the habit of physical fitness ingrained at an early age is crucial. But it doesn't have to be done overnight. It's like deciding to finally give up mayonnaise on your sandwiches or learning how to read food labels; you just stick that Canada Food Guide up on the fridge and start to make slow, small changes. You don't have to sign up for a marathon. But you do need a goal. Set a small, easily attainable one. Make a family pact to follow the Food Guide and do something active every week end. Then, start to make changes in your everyday life. Small, easy ones like taking the stairs at work, or walk ing instead of driving those short few blocks to the mall. Use your bike, not the car. Go rollerblading. Tell the kids to take the dog for a walk. And don't take no for an answer. Perhaps, the most important change is in your own mindset. Once fitness becomes just a part of daily living, it no longer is a chore. It's as much a habit as anything else. You don't go out without brushing your teeth; why would you go without exercise? We can't ignore the facts: primary school kids sit in class about 25 hours a week and spend the same amount of time, on average, in front of the televi sion. They are physically active for only 14 hours a week and that number drops when they reach high school. We are nurturing a generation of fatness, not fitness. The worst thing is, obesity and inactivity are preventable health problems. And there's lot's that can be done on a individual level to counteract it. I heard someone once say the best thing you can do for your children is not pass on any of your own bad habits. Here's a radical idea: Let's opt out of the unhealthy lifestyle suburbia demands. Resist the strong temptation to drop the family off or hop in the car for a quick errand. End the constant, pervasive adoration of the almighty car that is part and parcel of the whole problem. If we have to pass on any thing to our kids, make it a bus or GO train pass. Let the whining begin.
