Photo by Graham Paine W endy Wales will be having a whale of a good time this weekend when she dons her Scottish costumes and kicks up her heels on stage at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. The Oakville performing artist, who majored in dance at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, is strutting more than her dance steps in this year's Ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee). As costume designer for the fifth annual Scottish extravagan za (three of them in Oakville), she is also showcasing her sewing skills. Wales says she her hyperactivity as a child got her into dancing. "My mom wanted to find something to bum my energy," says the vibrant 27-year-old, with a laugh. "When I was three, a friend of mine started taking ballet lessons. So, my mom stuck me in, too. And it kind of stuck with me. This will be my 24th year." As for sewing, Wales' mother is responsible for that as well, since she sewed all her daughter's clothes, a skill she learned from her mother. So, you could say it's in the genes. "I think I was the only 10-year-old with her own sewing box," quips Wales. "And I still have the same one, actually." And that sewing box has been seeing a lot of activity in the past few weeks as Wales, her mother, and a couple of dedicated helpers prepared the costumes for this year's Ceilidh in Oakville. But these two endeavours are not the only two creative pursuits that Wales follows. She is a professional photogra pher by day and a dancer/sewer by night. "Dancing will always come first, over photography," she stresses, noting that she originally planned for a career in dancing. However, her desire to audition for the Nation al Ballet School was thwarted by mother, who, once again, had a hand in her daughter's destiny. "She didn't want me going off living somewhere else at age 9. And I'm happy with the way my dancing has turned out. I love performing with the (Tartan) Terrors.
