www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, January 15, 2016 | 18 Learning outside the classroom equals meaningful real-life lessons continued from p.5 Susan told the Oakville Beaver Flynn had "gone out of his way to ensure Noah and Brooke were having the best experience possible" at Queen's Park. "We were speaking to Mr. Flynn about how fortunate we are to have both our children participate in this wonderful opportunity. He explained that he wished more students knew about the program," said Susan. "We really want to express our gratitude to Kevin Flynn, who supported Noah and Brooke in their quests to be pages." Westwater noted she had to write an essay on why she should be chosen, and list extracurricular and volunteer-related activities and other things "that make you special" in order to get into the program. "After hearing all the stories about the page program from past students, my mom and my brother, I was really intrigued about the experience. It was definitely something that I wanted to do," said Westwater. She said the skills she acquired as a page will prepare her for high school and university. The 13-year-old is considering a career in politics because of her curiosity, her love of being a leader and the possibility of creating laws and representing different people, she said. "I was really interested in (Dowdeswell's) position. I learned how she has to travel all over the world and she meets interesting people. She has the final say in the law. That would be a really interesting job to have," said Westwater. "It was very important to me (being a page) because it was the only chance I would get to do this. It taught me so much. The skills I learned I can use for the rest of my life, which is really nice." For more information, visit www.ontla.on.ca and select the Legislative Page Program header. New hospital opens discharge lounge Halton Healthcare opened its new Patient Discharge Lounge at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) Jan. 4. It provides discharged patients with a quiet, safe, and comfortable place to stay while they wait for their ride home. The lounge is dedicated to the memory of Alberto D'Orazio, and several members of the D'Orazio family joined hospital officials at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening. Hospital staff said the family generously donated to the general equipment fund of the new OTMH to honour Alberto. "A patient's discharge from hospital doesn't always align with their loved ones' and caregiver's schedules. Consequently, patients have often had to wait in their hospital room for extended periods of time until their family member or friend could pick them up," said Cathy Raiskums, manager of social work and patient flow. "This can be stressful for both the patient and their family." The lounge was designed with both the patient and their family in mind. It has comfortable reclining chairs, privacy curtains and adequate space for patients to keep their belongings. It's near the hospital's south entrance -- the designated patient pick-up and drop-off area. "The caregiver can rest assured the discharged patient is waiting for transport in comfort." The lounge is for patients who are ready to go home and don't require medical care and is not for those at high risk of falls or who are cognitively impaired. The lounge is staffed by one registered practical nurse, assisted by volunteers, and is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. "We are very excited about introducing this innovative new service. In addition to providing patients with a more comfortable transition home, this new service will improve patient flow within the hospital," said Denise Hardenne, Health Healthcare president and CEO. "It is all a part of our strategic plan to provide exemplary patient care, always." Open your senses to what others have experienced. PLUM'S FOOD SHOP IS NOW OPEN!
