With the season's first major snowfall arriving overnight Monday and snow continuing to fall into the morning commute, Environment Canada advised drivers to exercise caution as roads had the potential to become hazardous at times. Halton police reported eight traffic accidents across the region, including three in Oakville, between 1:15 a.m. and 10 a.m. Halton police spokesperson Sgt. Chantal Corner cautioned motorists to give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations, to drive slowly and give vehicles in front lots of space. "Be alert, keep off the cellphones and leave lots of space, so if you do hit an icy patch, you have a lot of room to stop," she said. Corner also recommended residents completely clear snow and ice off their vehicles before driving to ensure proper visibility. Between 5-10 centimetres of snow was expected to fall by Tuesday afternoon in Oakville and the surrounding areas. The precipitation was heavy at times, Environment Canada reported. In addition, strong wind gusts, up to 70 km/h, associated with a cold front were expected to create blowing snow and reduced visibility.
