Wednesday, August 8. 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A3 Noise complaints widespread (Continued from page 1) windows closed, it's loud, and for people with no air condition ing, like myself ... I don't open the windows. I just have a fan going in the bedroom. It's sad because it's such a nice area," said Morgan. When Morgan moved in, the donut shop wasn't there. It may have been in the planning stages, but Morgan said she did n't think to check. "There was a mobile trailer there for selling homes. I never gave it a thought," she said. "It's been going on for two years, but it seems to have been escalating a lot more in the last couple of months. We've really tried to put up with it, we've really tried to be fair, but it's starting to get so bad," said Morgan. "We don't object to the Tim Hortons, we just wish it was not the meeting place for so many youngsters, so late at night." Morgan admits that things quiet down when a police offi cer visits, but as soon as the offi cer leaves, "it all starts up again." If the residents try to approach the youths, they "start hurling abuse at us," said Morgan. "I've got sleep depriva tion like you wouldn't believe." "We have responded to a few calls up there of late," confirmed Acting Staff Sgt. Rod Cliffe of the Halton Regional Police. Both the Town of Oakville by-law enforcement manager Moira Fogarty and police said if residents are willing to give evi dence in court, the police can Photo by Barrie Erskine H ilary M organ looks out onto the neighbouring plaza where noise from youths a t night m akes it difficult to sleep. charge people identified as making the noise. Sometimes, however, it's hoped that just a police visit will curtail the noise. And it becomes a dicey situation because the patrons of the business have the right to be there. "Most people don't relish the idea o f giving evidence in court," acknowledged Cliffe, who said people are irritated more in summer for obvious reasons, house and car windows are open and youths are more likely to hang out in July than January. Oakville has other problem spots where plazas are "very close to residential properties", said Cliffe, noting the plaza on Marlborough Court at Trafalgar Road is one. "It's just awful. There's no other way of describing it," said Bedard, adding the noise abates on weekends, but it's weekdays that most residents have to get up early. Fogarty admits such strife often occurs when commercial zoning abuts residential, but advises residents to call police and also to try to work some thing out with the businesses in the plaza regarding rules of con duct at the plaza. Neither of the Ward 6 coun cillors were even aware of the Penrose Lane problem. "I think people should always contact their councillors," said Councillor Kurt Franklin. That's because councillors can often get problems fixed. Franklin sits on the Trafalgar Community Consultation Committee, a police/community liaison committee that has suc cessfully curtailed teen partying activities in recent years. Franklin said youths were throwing beer bottles into resi dents' backyards there. Ravine bush parties were also a big problem at one time, he said. Youths even partied under the wooden playground structure at Sheridan Park until "they almost burned it down," said Franklin. "Kids can be creative and this sounds like it might be fair ly new. Usually they like seclud ed areas," said Franklin, noting it's a summer ill. He added that police are cur rently clamping down on a ravine party problem at Wedgewood Creek behind Hudson Place.
