The cornerstone of Crime Stoppers is anonymity. Without it Thunder Bay District Crime Stoppers as well as countless other programs World wide would fall. Callers can be rest assured that we do not use caller ID; calls are not tape recorded; and at no time are callers asked to identify themselves nor are they asked for any other information that could potentially identify them. Funds to run the Crime Stoppers Program are provided solely by the Community through sponsorships and other fundraising initiatives. There is no Government funding. Providing tip information to Crime Stoppers is easy; just call toll free 1-800-222-tips (8477) or log onto our web site at: www.thunderbaydistrictcrimestoppers.com Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie Prep Time: 45 Mins Serves 8 Topping: 5 large sweet potatoes 2 tbsp butter 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped salt and pepper to taste Filling: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 lbs ground turkey 3 large carrots, chopped 1 cup button mushrooms 1 cup fresh or frozen peas (if using frozen, do not thaw) 2 tbsp tomato paste 1/4 cup BBQ sauce or ketchup 1/4 all purpose flour 1 cup chicken stock salt and pepper to taste Pre-heat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly oil a 13” x 9” baking dish. Prick each potato several times with a fork and microwave no more than three at a time until tender (app. 4 min for each potato). Remove all skins and place potatoes in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mash well. Set aside. In large skillet, on med-high, heat oil. Saute onions until transparent, add garlic and saute for 30 more seconds. Add ground turkey and saute until meat is cooked and starting to brown. Add carrots, mushrooms and peas. Saute for two minutes. Add tomato paste and BBQ sauce. Add flour and blend well. Add chicken stock. Continue cooking until mixture starts to thicken, approx. 5 mins. Remove from heat. Turn turkey mixture out into baking dish and spread evenly. Top the turkey with sweet potato, spreading evenly to cover the entire dish. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes or until ingredients start to bubble up the sides, and the top starts to brown. Great Scotties! Here we Come! Hurry Hard Karen Hardy Staff 6 teams from the Ontario Curling Association (OCA) and 4 teams from the Northern Ontario Curling Association (NOCA) will compete in a 10-team Round Robin Format with the winner representing Ontario in the Canadian Scotties Tournament of Hearts. On Jan. 21st - 27th, the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Espanola will see some formidable local talent: Skip-Amy Stachiw ( originally from Terrace Bay); Third - Alissa Begin, (parents Yvon & Elaine Ruoho formerly Nipigon Red Rock); Second - Lisa Foulds (Nipigon’s James & Helen’s daughter); and Lead - Larissa Stevens ( curled with Mike Assad formerly from Geraldton, Mike McCarville and Ashley Miharija in the 2008 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship representing Northern Ontario). Team Stachiw’s Coach Dick Henderson will also be going to Espanola. Another team ( with local ties) to cheer on is the Krista McCarville Rink. Krista married Mike McCarville ( Nipigon’s Selina Pelletier’s Grandson). Skip- Krista is curling with Third-Tara George, Second - Kari MacLean-Kraft and Lorraine Lang ( Red Rock’s Rick Lang’s wife) will be setting up play with the Lead rocks. McCarville’s 5th player is Red Rock’s very own Heather Houston and the Coach is Tom Coulterman. In 2006 and 2007, Krista’s rink represented Ontario in the Canadian Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
