During the holiday season, police are stepping up patrols through the annual Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) spot checks. The first week of holiday spot checks ran Dec. 6-13. It saw more than 3,500 cars stopped and 11 impaired driving arrests made -- six in Milton/Halton Hills, four in Burlington and one in Oakville. Police offered some of the details about a few of the more notable incidents in each municipality. · On Saturday, Dec. 12 at 4:40 p.m., a man and his 13-year-old son were driving westbound on Dundas Street near Sixth Line in Oakville. The driver saw a Dodge Ram, also driving westbound, swerving in and out of lanes. After narrowly missing the motorist's car several times, the truck accelerated quickly and attempted to change lanes, but collided with the vehicle occupied by the father and son. A 34-year-old Burlington man was charged with impaired driving. Police say the driver's level of impairment was a result of allegedly drinking the night before. · On Saturday, Dec. 12, just before midnight, a motorist called police to report an erratic driver on Walker's Line in Burlington. Officers located a vehicle and saw that both passenger side tires were flat with the vehicle being driven on its rims. A 27-year-old Burlington woman was charged with impaired driving. The woman had a blood alcohol concentration more than three times the legal limit, say police. · On Thursday, Dec. 10, just before 7 a.m., a woman drove herself to Georgetown District Hospital to get attention for an injured finger. After being released four hours later, and ignoring the physician's advice to not drive, as she appeared to be intoxicated, police located her in a vehicle in the hospital parking lot. A 50-year-old Halton Hills woman was charged with care and control of a vehicle and also having more than 80 mgs of blood alcohol. · On Saturday, Dec. 12 at 10 p.m., officers in R.I.D.E. checks on Main Street in Milton stopped a vehicle bearing a strong odor of marijuana. In addition to a small package of marijuana found on an individual in the vehicle, a large duffle bag with 202 grams of marijuana and more than $1,800 in cash also was seized. A 20-year-old Milton man was charged. The spot checks continue throughout Halton until Jan. 1, 2016.
