www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 10, 2015 | 10 Town posts info on how to help Syrian refugees online by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff The Town of Oakville is sharing -- via its website -- information on what residents can do to welcome Syrians to Canada. The federal government is working with Canadian organizations, private sponsors and all levels of government to help Syrian refugees resettle in Canada. After announcing its support of the federal government's refugee plans, the Town is now sharing information for local residents who want to get involved. Of the first wave of refugees, 10,000 by year end, the majority will be privatelysponsored and settled and cared for by their sponsors. In Ontario, those accessing the federallyfunded Refugee Assistance Program agencies will be located in six urban centres: Toronto, Ottawa, London, Windsor, Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo. An additional 15,000 refugees are expected to come to Canada by the end of February 2016. Oakville residents interested in helping can do so through the Canadian Red Cross at http://goo.gl/qDMWcs. Faith groups assisting refugees The Town also notes many faith organizations across Halton are organizing sponsorship of refugee families. Residents are encouraged to connect with their local place of worship to find out what they can do to help. Residents can find up-to-date information on refugee resettlement efforts at www.cic. gc.ca/english/refugees/welcome/index.asp. As of Wednesday (Dec. 9), the site states 1,451 permanent resident visas have been issued to refugees to come to Canada and 416 Syrian refugees have arrived.
