www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, December 4, 2015 | 8 Sun sets on The Sheridan Sun print edition Dec. 17 by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver The little Oakville newspaper that could has been churning out pages for 44 years, but will finally run out of print this month. Since 1971, The Sheridan Sun has been published weekly during the school year by Sheridan College's print journalism students at the Trafalgar Campus. On Thursday, Dec. 17, bundles of the college paper will be dropped into newsstands across its campuses for the last time. "It's a sad day. Having that paper drop in that box every Thursday was an energizing moment in the newsroom. Students would hover around (and say), `When is it getting here?'" said Nathan Mallett, former print journalism program coordinator and current public relations-corporate communications coordinator. "When it arrives, they rush over to the newsstand, pick up a copy, find their story and hold it in their hands. That whole dynamic will be missed." Merged programs The reason for the shutdown is attributed to the recent merging of the print/online and broadcast programs as a single journalism course, according to Kathy Muldoon, print journalism program coordinator. Because there are no faculty or first-year students slotted for Since 1952 newspaper production next semester, the final printed issue will be Dec. 17. "There isn't enough time (to keep it going) by combining all the curriculum from those two programs to do what we do in the print program," said Muldoon. "There aren't enough class hours devoted to the time it takes to produce the weekly newspaper of 12-16 pages." Since first-year students joined the merged program this fall, the paper was going to be placed on hiatus anyway, Mallett said. "It was one of these things where the decision was being made by the co-ordinator of the new merged program (Nicole Blanchett Neheli). The question, was there going to be room for it in the fall of 2016? It doesn't look like that," he said. Still online "A lot of people think we should be condensing it into a daily news cycle for web. Come in the morning, write a story, put it on the website that day. That was the idea behind discontinuing this newspaper." The first two semesters in the combined program will be classroombased while the "hands-on" work will take place in semesters three and four, Mallett noted. Production of The Sheridan Sun will continue for online publication, as PDF versions will be posted in the ISSUU format on its website. "They will still go through a cycle of The Sheridan Sun newspaper. The only thing that's changing is we aren't printing it on paper. There's going to be pages laid out, same templates that we use now," said Muldoon. see Last on p.13 Carpet Cleaning Specialists The Sun is setting on Sheridan College's The Sheridan Sun weekly print edition while the digital versions will continue.
